Stonehill Stuns UMass Lowell, 2-0; NE-10 Title Slips Away

Stonehill College scored two goals three minutes apart in the first half to stun UMass Lowell, 2-0, Friday afternoon in the Northeast-10 Conference regular season finale at Skyhawk Field.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 12-4-1 overall and 10-3-0 in the NE-10 (30 points) and places in a share of second place with Southern New Hampshire University (14-3-0, 10-3-0 NE-10, 30 points), which defeated American International College, 4-1. The Penmen earned the No. 2 seed via tiebreaker, having won the regular season clash against UMass Lowell, 3-0, on Oct. 17.

Merrimack won the NE-10 regular season title as it defeated Saint Rose 4-0 Friday to finish with a Conference record of 10-2-1 (12-2-2 overall) and 32 points.

Regardless, UMass Lowell will host a NE-10 Tournament quarterfinal match Monday (4:00) against an opponent to be determined.

Stonehill ends its season at 5-11-1 overall and 4-9-0 in the Conference.

UMass Lowell could not find its way to a goal, even with a 20-6 advantage on shots (6-5 on target) and a 7-2 edge on corner kicks.

Stonehill opened the scoring in the 31st minute when Jonathan Hope beat junior GK Chris Maierle (Wantagh, N.Y.) to the low right corner off one-touch passing from junior M Kevin Gilmartin and freshman F Drew Montano.

Freshman B Evan Devanny doubled the Skyhawk lead three minutes later when he tucked home the rebound off a saved shot from sophomore M Will Miller.

Sophomore GK Adam Colella stopped six shots for Stonehill while Maierle had three saves for UMass Lowell.
