Junior F Monica Yanez scored both goals, including the game-winner in the second minute of overtime, to lead the University of New Haven over UMass Lowell, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer clash at Cushing Field.

The loss was the fourth straight for UMass Lowell, which slipped to 4-9-2 overall and 3-9-1 in the NE-10 entering Wednesday's regular season home finale against Saint Michael's (7:00). The River Hawks cap the season Saturday, Oct. 27 at Southern Connecticut (2:00).

The win was the fourth straight for New Haven, which improved to 11-4-1 overall and 8-4-1 in the Conference.

UMass Lowell opened the scoring in the 26^th minute when senior Julia Donigian (Wakefield, Mass.) threaded a through-ball to senior M Jenna Costa (Attleboro, Mass.), who beat a defender and got by sophomore GK Natasha Purchla to tap into an empty net.

Yanez leveled 10 minutes later on a header off a failed clearance by the UMass Lowell defense after sophomore F Amber Simms was denied by the crossbar.

The River Hawks nearly went ahead in the final minutes when freshman B Shannon Rubin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) broke down the left flank and crossed to junior M Gia O'Connor (Dracut, Mass.), but O'Connor's side volley was right at Purchla.

Yanez scored the game-winner on a similar play to her first. The Chargers were awarded a free kick just outside the box to the right of the goal. As UMass Lowell tried to clear, Simms headed to Yanez, who headed home out of the reach of sophomore GK Jane Hatzikonstantis (Tewksbury, Mass.).

UMass Lowell enjoyed a 21-14 shots advantage (11-5 on target). Purchla stopped 10 shots while Hatzikonstantis had three saves.
