First half goals lift Southern Connecticut over UMass Lowell, 2-1

Morais nets 10th goal of the season; at Dominican next

Sophomore F Homero Morais (Somerville, Mass.) netted his 10th goal of the season, but it wasn't enough as No. 7 UMass Lowell dropped a 2-1 decision to Southern Connecticut in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup Saturday at Cushing Field.
 
With the loss, the River Hawks fell to 11-3-1 overall and 10-2-0 in NE-10 play entering Tuesday's non-conference clash at Dominican (3:30).
 
Morais' goal was a 16th-minute header on a free kick from sophomore M Felipe Fagundes (Lowell, Mass.).
 
Meanwhile, Southern Connecticut capitalized on its scoring chances. F Mario DiMiceli found the back of the net twice for his 11th and 12th goals of the season.
 
The first goal came in eighth minute on a cross from F Daquan King that beat the UMass Lowell defender. DiMiceli's goal gave Southern Connecticut a 1-0 lead.
 
The second goal came in 44th minute of a 1-1 game. This time, the assist came from F Doural Scott who drew the defense on a two-on-one break before finding DiMiceli open in front of the net.
 
Southern Connecticut improved to 7-5-1 overall and 5-5-1 in the Conference.
 
UMass Lowell had plenty of chances to score, but the Southern Connecticut defense rose to the task. In the 33rd minute, Morais was blocked on two consecutive shots in front of the opposing goal.
 
UMass Lowell outshot Southern Connecticut 17-14 overall but shots on target were even at 5-5.
 
Junior Chris Maierle (Wantagh, N.Y.) had three saves while sophomore Stephen Sasso stopped four shots.
