Jenna Freitas (Manchester, N.H.) scored two goals to lead UMass Lowell over American International College, 4-0, Saturday afternoon in the Northeast-10 Conference field hockey regular season finale at Ronald J. Abdow Field.
With the win, UMass Lowell ends the regular season with a 15-3 overall record and an 8-2 clip in the NE-10, good for a share of second place with Bentley (8-2).
The River Hawks received the No. 3 seed for the NE-10 Tournament – by virtue of Bentley's 2-0 victory over the River Hawks on Oct. 4 – and hosts No. 6 Stonehill (9-9, 5-5 NE-10) Wednesday in the quarterfinal round at 7:00.
The NE-10 semifinal and championship are slated for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 27-28, at No. 1 seed/regular season champion Merrimack College.
AIC ends its season 3-15 overall and 2-8 in the NE-10.
Sophomore F
Bianca Jones (Watertown, Mass.) added one goal and one assist while junior F
Rachel McCarthy (Reading, Mass.) also scored a goal, her 23
rd of the year.
Jones fed Freitas for her fourth goal of the season in the 20
th minute to give the River Hawks a 1-0 lead and McCarthy scored unassisted in the 29
th minute to double UMass Lowell's lead.
Junior F
Melissa Effertz (Oceanside, Calif.) then set up Freitas' second goal in the 58
th minute and Jones capped the scoring in the 68
th unassisted.
UMass Lowell outshot AIC 26-7 overall and 20-5 on frame. Junior GK
Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass.) stopped five shots in her fourth shutout of the year.
Junior GK Kori Huffman stopped 16 shots for AIC.
