Former Standout Goalie Roloson Joins UMass Lowell Staff

Sixteen-year NHL vet to join team for Denver, Colorado College weekend

Roloson's NHL Career

Dwayne Roloson '94, a 16-year veteran of the NHL, was named a volunteer assistant coach with the UMass Lowell hockey team, head coach Norm Bazin announced Thursday.

Roloson, 43, pending the resolution of the NHL lockout, is seeking an NHL contract after two solid years with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He is expected remain with the team until then.

“I feel this will be a great opportunity, to add to the UMass Lowell hockey staff while coming back to a place that gave me so much," Roloson said.

A veteran of 606 NHL games with six teams, Roloson enjoyed terrific spells particularly with Edmonton from 2005-09; Minnesota from 2002-04 and 2005-06; and most recently the last two seasons with Tampa Bay.

Under former ULowell standout/then head coach Craig MacTavish, Roloson helped guide Edmonton to the 2006 Stanley Cup final where it lost to Carolina in seven games. He also backstopped the Lightning to the Eastern Conference final in 2011, where it lost to Stanley Cup champion Boston in seven games.

“Being able to add an alum like Roli is tremendous,” said Bazin, currently in his second year. “He lived the experience as a student and player here at UMass Lowell then excelled in the National Hockey League for a number of years. He will be a tremendous resource for our guys to learn what it takes to be successful at this level and beyond.”

Roloson was the recipient of many awards during his time at UMass Lowell. He was named the Hockey East Player of the Year and a Hobey Baker finalist in 1994 as he and Bazin led UMass Lowell to the Hockey East Tournament championship game and the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal.

Roloson was inducted into the UMass Lowell Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999, his first year of eligibility.
