Junior B Eirik Bjornoe converted a penalty kick and assisted on another goal as No. 1 Long Island University Post defeated No. 5 UMass Lowell, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference men's soccer clash at Robert Blitz Field.

The loss was the first of the season for UMass Lowell, which slipped to 10-1-1 entering Saturday's home match against Saint Anselm (1:00).

LIU Post improved to 12-0.

“I think we need to improve all aspects of our game from defending to the final third,” said head coach Christian Figueroa. “We need to be able to be consistent from the first whistle through the end.”

LIU Post opened the scoring in the 15th minute when UMass Lowell was whistled for a foul in the box on a Pioneer free kick. Bjornoe sent junior GK Chris Maierle (Wantagh, N.Y.) right and placed the spot kick inside the left post.

UMass Lowell put together chances in the second half, one by junior M Kyle Garvan (Braintree, Mass.) in the 59th that was saved by junior GK Marco Jorgensen; and another by Dan Galvin (Attleboro, Mass.) two minutes later, which went wide.

The Pioneers doubled their lead in the 74th when senior F Andreas Olsson crossed from the left side which Maierle tipped, but Cemil Turan finished from 15 yards out into the top right of the goal.

UMass Lowell sent players forward as the clock weaned and the Pioneers capitalized in the 88th minute. Bjornoe sent a through-ball on which junior Jonathon Watkin ran and slotted into the lower right corner from 10 yards out.

LIU Post outshot UMass Lowell, 18-8 overall and 8-4 on target as Maierle stopped five shots. Jorgensen had four saves for the Pioneers.
