O'Brien enters his fourth year with the UMass Lowell athletic department after graduating from UMass Lowell with a bachelor's degree in English (Journalism & Professional Writing) in 2019.
He works as the primary communications contact for the ice hockey and men's and women's cross country/track and field programs. In this role, he manages public and media relations services for his teams, in addition to their social media accounts and websites, while also overseeing official statistics and recordkeeping for his programs. Prior to his promotion to assistant director of athletic communications in 2024, he served as an athletic communications assistant for two years, working as the primary communications contact for multiple sports, including ice hockey, softball and men's and women's cross country/track and field. He has also aided in the publicity of seven America East Championship winning teams during his tenure so far.
Before UMass Lowell, O'Brien worked on the sports information staff at Tufts University where he assisted with game day operations for nationally-ranked NCAA Division III teams. He also interned with the Massachusetts Pirates and Futures Collegiate Baseball League in various written content and communications roles.
