Alex Macpherson joined the River Hawks coaching staff in the summer of 2019.
A holder of UEFA and USSF coaching qualifications, has coached at the Professional, Collegiate, and Youth Levels.
Throughout his inaugural season at Lowell, Macpherson primarily worked with midfielders and forwards and under his tutelage Emily Nelson was awarded America East All-Second Team and lead the program with six goals, and Anna Edson and Stephanie Kemp being awarded All-Rookie Team.
Prior to joining the River Hawks staff, he served two seasons as an assistant coach with Boston University Women’s Soccer. A member of the 2018 Coaching Staff of the Year, he helped guide the Terriers to Patriot League Championship and an appearance at the NCAA College Cup. During the 2017 season, Macpherson was assigned to work with defenders and under his tutelage Rachel Bloznalis was awarded Patriot League Defender of the Year and Patriot League All-First Team. Bloznalis now plays professionally with Djurgårdens IF Fotboll in Sweden and has represented the U-23 USWNT.
Alongside his role at BU, he was the International Partnership Executive for professional soccer team Celtic Football Club. Macpherson was instrumental in the application of their youth academy methodology throughout a significant network of North American partner clubs.
He has also served as the Assistant Coach and interim Head Coach for Wentworth Institute of Technology Women’s Soccer. He helped the program win its first ever Commonwealth Coast Conference championship in 2016. The first female program in school history to win a conference title, eliminated nationally ranked opponents in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Under his tutelage Mary Pastorelli was named All-Region First Team, with Morgan Miller and Emily Nelson named All-Region Third Team.
Macpherson's college coaching career began at Franklin Pierce University as a graduate assistant coach for the women's soccer team, helping the program reach the semifinal round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship in 2014.
Macpherson earned his bachelor of arts degree in Graphic Design from Nottingham Trent University (England) before earning his master of business administration in Sports Management from Franklin Pierce University in 2016. He is currently pursuing a master of arts in Organizational Leadership from UMass Lowell. Macpherson also expects to be awarded the USSF B Coaching License in 2020.
Alex currently lives in Shrewsbury, Mass. with his fiancé Chelsie.
