Abel Wasswa

Abel Wasswa enters his sixth season as assistant coach in 2021 after joining the UMass Lowell Men’s Soccer coaching staff in the spring of 2016.

In his first season as part of the staff, Wasswa helped guide the UMass Lowell Men’s soccer team to their best finish in the program’s Division I history with a 13-1-2 record, ending the year ranked No. 3 in the RPI and No. 11 in the NSCAA Top 25 poll.
 
The River Hawks went on to capture their first America East Regular Season Championship in school and program history.  In addition, Wasswa was named as part of the America East Conference Coaching Staff of the Year as well as the NSCAA East Region Coaching Staff of the Year.
 
UMass Lowell has reached the America East Championship in each of the last three seasons, making the title game in 2017 and reaching the semifinals in 2018 and 2019.
 
Wasswa has helped coach an America East Conference Striker of Year, Goalie of the Year and Defender of the Year along with other individual accolades that River Hawk players have earned.
 
During his time with the River Hawks, Wasswa has guided players to the professional ranks including Wuilito Fernandes who made history as the first UMass Lowell Player to be selected in the MLS SuperDraft. Duran Lee who currently plays in the Canadian Premier League, Frankie Martinez selected by Sporting KC, Jakov Basic with HNK Hajduk Split and Stanley Alves with Richmond Kickers.

A former River Hawk player himself, Wasswa graduated from UMass Lowell, earning a degree in Management and Finance.

A native of Kampala Uganda, Wasswa now lives in Malden, Massachusetts.
