Assistant Coach Eric Sorenson enters his fourth season with UMass Lowell hockey, joining the staff prior to the 2023-24 season. He came to Lowell after spending two years as an assistant coach at Holy Cross.
During his time on staff in Worcester, Sorenson focused on skill development for defensemen and goaltenders, while also managing the penalty kill unit. He helped guide the Crusaders to their highest single-season win total since 2015-16 and capped off the 2022-23 season with an appearance in the Atlantic Hockey Championship, the program's first since 2006. During his time at Holy Cross, Sorenson also helped the program improve its conference goals allowed ranking from 10th to third and elevate its penalty kill unit to 17th nationally.
Before heading to Holy Cross, Sorenson spent time with a pair of NCAA Division III programs. He served as the first head coach at Rivier University, helping launch the young program in 2020. Prior to Rivier, he served as an assistant coach at Williams College from 2018-20, helping lead the Ephs to two NESCAC playoff appearances and the 2019-20 NESCAC regular-season championship. Sorenson has also made stops at Nazareth College and the Rochester Jr. Americans as both an assistant and goaltending coach.
Throughout his eight-year coaching career, Sorenson has been responsible for a variety of duties, including opponent pre-scouting, game-day lineup preparation, in-game adjustments and post-game analysis. He has helped facilitate player development resulting in 17 All-Conference selections, one Rookie of the Year, one Conference Player of the Year and one All-American selection.
A four-year collegiate goaltender at Western New England University from 2010-14, Sorenson served as the team's starting goaltender and holds program records for career wins, saves and shutouts.
Sorenson earned his bachelor's degree in business administration and sport management from Western New England in 2014 before earning his master's degree in sport administration from Canisius in 2017.
