Ryan Herrion joins the River Hawk men's basketball staff as an assistant coach for the 2023-24 campaign. Herrion is a familiar face in the America East Conference, having spent the last five seasons at New Hampshire.
Â
Herrion returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach in 2018-19. From his first to second season back with the Wildcats, he helped spur one of the biggest turnarounds in the country, increasing wins by 150% in 2019-20. From there, he helped guide the team to three consecutive third place finishes in the America East. A strong recruiter, Herrion coordinated UNH’s efforts in the transfer portal, landing six transfers for the 2022-23 season. He also served as the primary recruiter for three All-Conference honorees.
Â
Prior to 2018-19, Herrion spent the previous three seasons as assistant coach at Stonehill College. In his three years on staff there, Stonehill compiled a 56-33 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in 2016, when the Skyhawks went 24-9.
Â
Herrion first served on staff at UNH from 2013-15 as Director of Basketball Operations. In that role, he handled all the day-to-day operations of the men’s basketball program, provided assistance with practice and game preparation and oversaw summer camps and annual fundraising events. Herrion also served as the Director of Player Development and Video Coordinator. He provided daily video analysis for player skill development and opponent scouting reports.
Â
Before returning to his alma mater, Herrion was a graduate assistant coach at Marshall University for the 2012-13 season. In addition to assisting with daily skill development of the student-athletes and working directly with the perimeter players, he also served as the team’s academic monitor.
Â
Herrion earned his bachelor’s degree from New Hampshire in sociology in 2012. He was a walk-on during his first three seasons before earning a scholarship and serving as team tri-captain as a senior. He also was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
