Brendan Monaghan, who enters his third year at UMass Lowell, joined the coaching staff in the summer of 2013 and has been responsible for the recruiting operations and working specifically with the pitching staff.
Monaghan joined UMass Lowell after serving as the volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, Saint John’s University, for two years.
In the summer of 2013, Monaghan coached the Sag Harbor Whalers in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League.
The move toward coaching came after a four year career in the professional baseball ranks. Monaghan signed with the Baltimore Orioles as a free agent in 2007 and began his professional career with the Bluefield Orioles of the Rookie Appalachian League. The catcher batted .277 with eight doubles, four home runs and a team-high 38 RBI in 49 games for Bluefield. Monaghan spent the next two seasons with the Delmarva Shorebirds in the Class-A South Atlantic League, batting a combined .207 with 11 doubles, two home runs and 30 RBI in 86 games.
Monaghan also played a year of independent ball for the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League. A league all-star behind the plate, he batted .291 with 18 doubles, two home runs and 24 RBI in 72 games.
Monaghan’s four-year playing career at St. John’s included three NCAA Tournament appearances and two Big East regular season titles. A first team All-Big East selection as a senior at St. John's, Monaghan had a .307 career average with 20 doubles and 59 RBI in 125 games, including 88 starts. Monaghan was also named a National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) All-American and the team most valuable player.
Monaghan plans to relocate to the greater Lowell area.
