The athletic health care team is comprised of five full-time athletic trainers in addition to several orthopedic, general medicine and specialty physicians. All staff members are certified by the Board of Certification, Inc. (BOC), are a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In addition to the certified staff, a number of undergraduate practicum students from local colleges and universities assist with team assignments.

PHYSICIANS
Dr. Scott A. Sigman is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who has been providing comprehensive care to patients at Orthopedic Surgical Associates since 1996, where he specializes in the knee and shoulder. Dr. Sigman graduated cum laude with his bachelor’s degree in biology from Tufts University, where he played varsity lacrosse. He then received his medical degree as a cum laude graduate of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Upon graduating with his medical degree, Dr. Sigman completed his postgraduate internship in General Surgery at St. Agnes Hospital, followed by a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Tufts Medical Center. Dr. Sigman also completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the prestigious Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic. Dr. Sigman is a also national and internationally recognized leader in Opioid Sparing Surgery. Dr. Sigman is the Chief Medical Officer for OrthoLazer Orthopedic Laser Centers. In 2019, Dr. Sigman was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, Faculty of Sports & Sports Medicine. This certificate is a culmination of his ongoing efforts to change the paradigm of postoperative pain management.Â
Dr. Thomas Herron, DO
Dr. Herron is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist at Orthopaedic Surgical Associates. He provides comprehensive care to patients of all ages and athletic backgrounds, specializing in advanced arthroscopic techniques of the knee, shoulder and hip. Dr. Herron also performs hip, knee, and shoulder replacements. Dr. Herron earned his medical degree from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, WV, where he graduated with honors. He then completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, serving as Chief Resident. Dr. Herron furthered his expertise through a Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Fellowship at Orthopaedic Research of Virginia in Richmond, VA.

Dr. Romanowsky graduated from Lowell High School before attending Boston College where he played for years of football. He then attended Tufts Medical School and completed his Internal Medicine residency at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME. Â

Mathew Savory D.O.
Lowell, MA
Dr. Savory grew up in New England and got his bachelor’s degree from Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire. He received his medical degree in Osteopathic Medicine – the study of helping the body heal itself – from the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1997. He completed his medical residency in Worcester. Board-certified in internal medicine, he came to the Lowell area and worked as an associate physician before joining Mill City Medical as a partner in 2003. He’s a staff physician at Lowell General Hospital, where he also serves as a director for case management and is the medical director for the Certified Athletic Trainer Program at Merrimack College, as well as an adjunct professor in the medical administration training program at Merrimack’s College of Health Sciences.
Dr. John Andrea, MD
Dr. Andrea is board-certified in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine. He went to The University of New England for his medical degree, and completed his residency in Family Medicine at Fairfax Family Practice in Virginia. He then went on to complete a Sports Medicine Fellowship at INOVA-Fairfax, graduating in 2021. Outside of taking care of patients of all ages as a primary care physician, Dr. Andrea has focused interests in Non-Operative Orthopedic/Sports Medicine care including Ultrasound, procedures, and injections. He also continues to practice Osteopathic Manipulation (OMM).

Dr. Caitlin Waters, MD
Dr. Waters is board certified in Internal Medicine. She completed her residency at North Shore Medical Center – Partners Healthcare, in Salem, MA and received her medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine, in Dominica, West Indies. Dr. Waters completed a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at UMass Memorial Medical School in 2017-2018. When she’s not helping her patients, Dr. Waters enjoys live music, adventure travel, and hanging with family.Â

UMass Lowell Health Services – UMass Lowell Health Service is located in University Crossing. They provide accessible, affordable, quality health care to all UML students. While walk-in service is provided for emergency first aid, students must have an appointment to see the nurse practitioner for an illness or routine health care.
