HANOVER, N.H. – Behind a goal from senior Luka Marceau (Newton, Mass.), the UMass Lowell women's soccer team (0-2-1) pieced together an excellent second half at Dartmouth (1-0-0) but came up just short in a 2-1 loss.
"It was a tough start for us today," said Head Coach Mira Novak. "Credit to Dartmouth, they were ready to go and came out of the gate quick with two goals. In the second half, the response was solid: we defended well and scored a decent goal."
Early in the second half, Marceau booted a shot that ricocheted off a Dartmouth defender and into the goal to cut the deficit in half. Her fifth career goal gave the River Hawks new life in a half where they outshot the Big Green, 6-5.
"The important piece for me is the fight we showed in the second half and the desire to do something with the result and support each other," Novak said. "I think a lot of players played at the top of their abilities today and pushed themselves beyond what we've seen from them before. I'm really proud of that, but I also want to acknowledge we're still working through becoming a team that can challenge for the America East Title."
Neither team rattled off a shot until about seven minutes into the game, when a strong cross allowed Dartmouth's Emmanuella Frimpomaa to open the scoring with an early goal. Although the reigning Ivy League Champions took the 1-0 lead, sophomore Nora Belin (Stockholm, Sweden) drove into the attacking third and rocketed a shot just over the net.
Less than 10 minutes later, Dartmouth widened its lead to 2-0 with a goal off the foot of Nadia Young. A Belin cross at the 19-minute mark led to a strong header attempt from Marceau that went over the goal. Marceau made her first start of the season in the match.
The Big Green kept the pressure on, taking six total corner kicks in the first half. Frimpomaa nearly scored her second goal around 32 minutes, but junior Rachel Welch (Franklin, Mass.) made one of her five saves on the night to deny her.
While Dartmouth started the second half mostly in the attacking third, the River Hawks came back at 52 minutes, as sophomore Kiera Fitzpatrick (Methuen, Mass.) ripped off a shot that just missed to the left side. Just a few minutes later, she forced the Big Green to make a save with a strong shot from a tough angle.
Marceau continued UMass Lowell's second-half momentum with her goal. The River Hawks kept applying pressure on Dartmouth down the stretch.
With three minutes to go, UMass Lowell earned a corner kick looking to equalize. Fitzpatrick made a strong cross, and freshman Silje McGee (London, Ontario) took a shot that was blocked. However, the Big Green were able to hold on late and secure the win.
Up next, UMass Lowell returns to Cushing Field to take on Merrimack at 6 p.m. on Sunday, August 23. The River Hawks are set to celebrate International Day, where fans are encouraged to wear National team jerseys to the match.
