River Hawks Visit Massachusetts for Midweek Clash, Head to Maine for Conference Series

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team (16–26, 6–12 AE) begins the week with a matchup on Tuesday against state rival Massachusetts (16–24), then travels north for a conference series against Maine (17–27, 11–7 AE). 

LAST TIME OUT
UMass Lowell wrapped up a five-game homestand last Tuesday before heading to Stony Brook over the weekend, finishing 0–3 on the week. The River Hawks stand at 16–26 on the season and 6–12 in America East play, currently holding sixth place in the conference standings above NJIT.

The River Hawks began the week against No. 20 Boston College, coming up just short in a 7–6 outcome this past Tuesday. Sophomore Brayden Cali (Taunton, Mass.) was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a triple, while also tallying two RBI and a run, as senior Carlos Martinez (Coamo, Puerto Rico) also knocked three hits in the contest with a run. Redshirt-sophomore Sean O'Leary (Foxboro, Mass.) went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run, while junior Scott Donahue (Medfield, Mass) also posted a multi-hit game with two hits and an RBI. Up on the bump to start, freshman Josh Doney (Lynn, Mass.) pitched three innings in the contest. Out of the bullpen for the River Hawks, freshman Tyler Dunlea (Attleboro, Mass.) tossed two innings with two strikeouts and no earned runs, as sophomore Jake LeFrancois (Worcester, Mass.) went two innings with three strikeouts.

UMass Lowell then faced former conference foe Stony Brook, dropping both games to the Seawolves last weekend. In the series opener, the River Hawks dropped an 11–1 decision in seven innings to Stony Brook. Donahue registered a hit and an RBI in the contest, while O'Leary went 2-for-4 at the plate, and Cali recorded a hit and a run in the game. Junior Alfred Mucciarone (Franklin, Mass.) got the start on the mound, and pitched 3.0 innings, as Doney came in relief in the contest, tossing 2.1 innings. In game two, UMass Lowell kept pace with the Seawolves early, but ultimately fell 8–4. O'Leary hit 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run, while also tallying two runs and an RBI, and junior Rowan Masse (Manchester, Conn.) knocked a double and added two runs in the contest. Senior Jacob Jette (Franklin, Mass.) began the game on the bump for UMass Lowell, pitching 3.0 innings with two strikeouts and one earned run in his outing. Out of the bullpen, LeFrancois went 1.0 inning without allowing a hit.

LEADING THE FLOCK
Heading into the final stretch of the regular season, O'Leary still ranks first on the team in batting average (.329), while also leading the team in on-base plus slugging percentage (.965), slugging percentage (.540), on-base percentage (.425), hits at 53, runs scored at 47 and home runs with eight. O'Leary is also tied for first in triples with graduate student Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic), senior Zachary Scott (Lunenburg, Mass.), junior Ryan Strand (Goffstown, N.H.), freshman Cal Chance (Wolcott, Conn.), Donahue, and Cali at one each. Chance leads the team overall in stolen bases (11). Masse ranks first on the team in walks (23), while Martinez leads the team overall for runs batted in with 34, and has hit the most doubles on the team (13). 

Mucciarone leads the team in earned run average (5.37), and holds a team-low in WHIP at 1.53. Graduate student Will Melby Jr. (Munster, Ind.), sophomore Nolan Geisler (Bayonne, N.J.), and LeFrancois are all tied for the most wins on the team with three. Martinez is still ranked first on the team for saves with four. Mucciarone has also pitched in the most innings (58.2) on the team, while senior Brian Foley (Milton, Mass.) has tossed the most strikeouts on the team at 50. 

HIGH-HIT GAMES THIS SEASON (10+ HITS)
Through 42 games this season, the River Hawks have tallied 10+ hits in 18 contests. UMass Lowell holds a 9–9 record in those games, with a season-high 21 hits coming in a non-conference matchup against San Francisco on Saturday, March 7.

MATCHUPS FEATURING 10+ STRIKEOUTS
Across 42 games this season, UMass Lowell has registered 10+ strikeouts in 10 outings, compiling a 5–5 record in those contests. UMass Lowell's highest single-game total during the 2026 season came on Saturday, February 14, when the team notched 12 strikeouts against Morehead State.

AE OVERALL PLAYER STATISTICAL RANKS
With two weeks remaining in conference play, O'Leary ranks sixth in the America East for batting average (.329) and slugging percentage (.540), while also sitting in seventh for on-base plus slugging percentage (.965), and tied for 10th for on-base percentage at .425. O'Leary is also ranked second in the conference for runs scored at 47, as Masse is behind tied for third with 42 runs scored. O'Leary is currently ranked third in the America East for hits with 53, as Chance and Martinez are tied for ninth with 49 hits. Martinez is tied for eighth in the conference for runs batted in with 34, while O'Leary is tied for 10th at 31 RBI. Martinez is also tied for second in doubles with 13, as Chance is tied for 10th with 10 doubles. O'Leary is also currently tied for fifth in home runs (8) in the conference. 

Mucciarone is ranked seventh in the America East for innings pitched with 58.2. Foley continues to be ranked in the top three in the America East for total strikeouts, sitting in third with 50, as Mucciarone is tied for eighth with 40. Melby Jr., LeFrancois, and Geisler are all tied for eighth in the conference for wins with three each. Martinez is currently tied for second in saves with four in the America East.

For overall team rankings in the conference, the River Hawks are ranked second for batting average (.277).

SCOUTING MASSACHUSETTS
Massachusetts most recently secured a series win over Ohio, earning a 1–0 victory on Sunday. The Minutemen now hold a 16–24 overall record with a 12–15 mark in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play. The top offensive player for Massachusetts is redshirt sophomore Anthony Tirado who has posted a team-high .325 batting average, with 55 hits, 32 runs scored, 24 RBI, nine doubles, three triples and a home run, as well as adding 21 stolen bases. Another piece to watch for is sophomore Gavin O'Brien who has tallied a .296 batting average with an on-base plus slugging percentage of .965, while also recording 47 hits, 39 RBI, 24 runs scored, 14 doubles, 10 home runs, and a triple this season. On the mound, junior Callen Powers owns a 3.50 earned run average, pitching in 72.0 innings with a team-high 67 strikeouts, and holds a 4–4 record on the season.  

SCOUTING MAINE
Maine heads into its meeting with UMass Lowell after a 7–3 series win over Binghamton on Sunday. The Black Bears are now 18–26 overall with a 11–7 mark in conference play, and hold second place in the America East. Offensively for the Black Bears, graduate student Juju Stevens has notched a team-high .309 batting average with 51 hits, 42 runs scored, 29 RBI, eight doubles, 12 home runs and two triples. Freshman Hunter St. Denis has also been key on the offensive side for Maine, recording a .295 batting average with 49 hits, 33 RBI, 25 runs scored, eight doubles and eight home runs. Leading the Black Bears' bullpen, redshirt junior Jason Krieger has logged a team-high 68.1 innings, recording 38 strikeouts and posting a 4.87 earned run average.

MATCHUP HISTORY
UMass Lowell leads the all-time series against Massachusetts, 4–2. The River Hawks are 2–0 at home and 2–2 on the road versus the Minutemen. Massachusetts earned a 5–4 decision in the most recent meeting on May 7, 2024. In the all-time series, Maine leads UMass Lowell 32–21, while the River Hawks are 13–12 at home versus the Black Bears. In their most recent series this season, Maine took two of three games, clinching the finale 10–6 on March 29, 2026.
