LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team (19–27, 9–12 AE) closes out the regular season this weekend, hosting Binghamton (26–19, 15–6 AE) for a conference series at Edward A. LeLacheur Park.
LAST TIME OUT
UMass Lowell put together a successful week, posting a 3–1 record highlighted by a conference-series sweep over Maine. The River Hawks improved to 19–27 overall and 9–12 in America East action, sitting fifth in the conference standings ahead of UAlbany and NJIT.
The River Hawks traveled to face in-state foe Massachusetts last Tuesday, dropping a hard-fought 11–10 contest after battling through all nine innings. Offensively, six River Hawks notched multi-hit games, as the team totaled 15 hits on the day. Senior Carlos Martinez (Coamo, Puerto Rico) stood out at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a home run, while also recording three RBI and three runs. Redshirt-sophomore Sean O'Leary (Foxboro, Mass.) posted two hits with two RBI and a run, while freshman Tyler McKillop (Blue Point, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, and also added two runs and an RBI in the contest. Starting on the mound, junior Evan Cornelius (Milford, Mass.) pitched 2.0 innings with two strikeouts, as senior Liam Rose (Voorhees, N.J.) came on in relief, tossing 2.1 innings and striking out two batters.
UMass Lowell bounced back from its midweek setback in impressive fashion, sweeping all three games of its conference series at Maine. Junior Alfred Mucciarone (Franklin, Mass.) was outstanding on the mound from start to finish, recording a complete-game shutout as UMass Lowell secured a 2–0 victory over the Black Bears in the series opener. In game two, the River Hawks broke things open with a six-run fourth inning, helping secure a 7–6 win and a series victory over Maine. Senior Zachary Scott (Lunenburg, Mass.) hit well at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run in the contest, while junior Ryan Strand (Goffstown, N.H.) also knocked two hits in the game and added a run. Making his 11th start on the mound this season, senior Jacob Jette (Franklin, Mass.) pitched 6.0 innings with a strikeout to earn his second win of the season. Sophomore Jake LeFrancois (Worcester, Mass.) entered in relief, tossing 3.0 innings with a strikeout, and allowed two hits and just one earned run as the right-hander earned his second save of the season.
The River Hawks capped off the sweep against Maine with a 5–4 victory in game three, fueled by a monster performance from graduate student Nicholas Solorzano (El Dorado Hills, Calif.). The catcher slugged two home runs and a double while tallying five RBI and two runs scored, including the decisive go-ahead two-run homer in the ninth inning. Sophomore Nolan Geisler (Bayonne, N.J.) got the start, pitching 5.2 innings with three strikeouts in his outing. Coming out of the bullpen, senior Brian Foley (Milton, Mass.) delivered a key performance, working 3.1 innings with three strikeouts, allowing just one hit, and keeping the opposition off the board to earn his second win of the season.

LEADING THE FLOCK
Heading into the last week of the regular season, O'Leary still ranks first on the team in batting average (.322), while also leading the team in on-base plus slugging percentage (.931), slugging percentage (.514), on-base percentage (.417), hits at 57, runs scored at 50 and home runs with eight. Sophomore Brayden Cali (Taunton, Mass.) leads the team overall in triples with two, while freshman Cal Chance (Wolcott, Conn.) ranks first on the team in stolen bases (11). Junior Rowan Masse (Manchester, Conn.) is tied for first on the team in walks (24) with O'Leary, while Martinez is also tied with O'Leary for first on the team for runs batted in with 37, and the senior has also recorded the most doubles on the team (13).
Mucciarone leads the team in earned run average (4.66), as Geisler holds a team-low in WHIP at 1.43. Graduate student Will Melby Jr. (Munster, Ind.), Geisler, LeFrancois, and Mucciarone are all tied for the most wins on the team with three. Martinez is still ranked first on the team for saves with four. Mucciarone has also pitched in the most innings (67.2) on the team, while Foley has tossed the most strikeouts on the team at 53.
PAIR OF RIVER HAWKS RECOGNIZED WITH AMERICA EAST WEEKLY HONORS
This week, two River Hawks earned America East Weekly honors, as Alfred Mucciarone was named Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season and Nicholas Solorzano was selected as Player of the Week. Mucciarone dominated last Friday, May 8, throwing a complete-game shutout with two strikeouts and two walks in a 2–0 win over Maine. Solorzano hit .294 (5-17) with a 1.000 on-base plus slugging percentage across four games, collecting five hits, two home runs, a double, six RBI, and two runs scored, highlighted by a huge series finale performance against Maine that included a go-ahead two-run home run and a 3-for-4 day (2 home runs, 1 double) at the plate with five RBI.

Through 46 games this season, the River Hawks have tallied 10+ hits in 19 contests. UMass Lowell holds a 9–10 record in those games, with a season-high 21 hits coming in a non-conference matchup against San Francisco on Saturday, March 7.

Throughout the season, Joseph DeLanzo has been one of the hardest hitters to strike out in Division I baseball, as the senior currently leads the nation in first for toughest batters to strike out with just six strikeouts in 167 at-bats (27.8 AB/K rate).

Alfred Mucciarone climbed the NCAA Division I stat leaderboard after logging his second complete game of the season last Friday at Maine, as the junior is now tied for 12th in the country with two complete games.

Martinez is tied for seventh in the conference with O'Leary for runs batted in with 37. Martinez is also tied for fourth in doubles with 13. Mucciarone is ranked third in the America East for innings pitched with 67.2. Foley is ranked fourth in the conference for strikeouts with 53, as Mucciarone is sitting in 10th with 42. SCOUTING BINGHAMTON
The River Hawks close out their America East schedule against Binghamton, with the Bearcats most recently winning a series against UAlbany before falling 11–9 in the finale. Binghamton comes in at 26–19 overall and 15–6 in conference action, holding first place in the America East. Offensively for the Bearcats, sophomore Matt Bolton leads the team overall in batting average (.335), on-base plus slugging percentage (.992), hits (57), doubles (13), runs scored (41), triples (4) and stolen bases (15). Out of the bullpen, junior Conner Griffin has recorded a 4.93 earned run average in his 12 starts through 49.1 innings, tallying a team-high 55 strikeouts and a 2–3 overall record. Junior Jackson Micthell has been key on the mound for the Bearcats, owning a 3.86 earned run average in 42.0 innings pitched with 13 appearances and five starts, tossing 47 strikeouts and posting a 3–1 record and four saves.
