River Hawks Cap Home Stretch against No. 20 Boston College, Then Head to Stony Brook

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team (16–23, 6–12 America East) closes out its five-game homestand on Tuesday against No. 20 Boston College (33–14) at Edward A. LeLacheur Park before heading to Stony Brook (16–24) for a weekend non-conference series.  

LAST TIME OUT
After hosting games last week, the River Hawks finished 1–3. UMass Lowell currently owns a 6–12 record in the America East, ranking sixth in the conference. 

The River Hawks opened last week's slate against cross-town rival Merrimack on Wednesday, securing a 10–8 victory after plating five runs in the second. Senior Carlos Martinez (Coamo, Puerto Rico) hit well at the plate, knocking a double and a home run, while also recording two RBI and two runs scored. Senior Joseph DeLanzo (Nutley, N.J.) went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, two RBI and a run, while junior Ryan Strand (Goffstown, N.H.) hit 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Junior Rowan Masse (Manchester, Conn.) also tallied a multi-hit game with two hits and a run in the contest. On the mound against the Warriors, junior Evan Cornelius (Milford, Mass.) made his third start of the season, pitching 4.0 innings with just one earned run in his outing. Freshman Colin Ducie (Plymouth, Mass.) worked 2.0 innings with a strikeout to pick up the first win of his collegiate career, while freshman Tyler Dunlea (Attleboro, Mass.) threw 1.2 scoreless innings with a strikeout to record the first save of his collegiate career.  

UMass Lowell then took on Bryant in a conference series, with the Bulldogs claiming all three contests. In the first game, UMass Lowell competed hard, but fell 8–5 against Bryant. Redshirt-sophomore Sean O'Leary (Foxboro, Mass.) stood out in the contest for the River Hawks, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored, while DeLanzo went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Starting on the mound for UMass Lowell, junior Alfred Mucciarone (Franklin, Mass.) went 5.1 innings pitched with four strikeouts. Out of the bullpen, sophomore Jake LeFrancois (Worcester, Mass.) tossed 3.2 innings with one strikeout, leaving the opposition hitless and allowing no earned runs. The River Hawks then battled the Bulldogs in game two, but faced a 5–3 setback on Saturday. DeLanzo registered a double and an RBI in the contest, and Martinez posted a hit and an RBI. Freshman Cal Chance (Wolcott, Conn.) and O'Leary each tallied a hit and a run in the game as well. Senior Jacob Jette (Franklin, Mass.) got the start on the bump, pitching six innings with three strikeouts, and allowed just two earned runs in his outing. Also pitching, graduate student Frankie DeMaro (Newburgh, N.Y.) went one inning, leaving the opposition hitless and scoreless. In the final contest of the series, UMass Lowell dropped a 4–2 decision on Sunday, as junior Scott Donahue (Medfield, Mass.) led the way offensively, knocking a triple with an RBI and a run. Sophomore Nolan Geisler (Bayonne, N.J.) made his second start on the mound this season, pitching 7.2 innings with five strikeouts, and allowing only two runs, while LeFrancois came in at relief, tossing 1.1 innings.  

LEADING THE FLOCK
Moving deeper into the season, O'Leary still leads the team in batting average (.318), while also ranking first for on-base plus slugging percentage (.949), slugging percentage (.527), on-base percentage (.422), runs scored at 44 and home runs with seven. O'Leary is also tied for first in triples with graduate student Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic), senior Zachary Scott (Lunenburg, Mass.), Strand, Donahue, and Chance at one each. Chance leads the team overall in hits (49) and stolen bases (11). Masse is tied for first on the team in walks (22) with O'Leary, while Martinez ranks first on the team for runs batted in with 33, and has hit the most doubles on the team (13). 

Geisler now leads the team in earned run average (4.65), and holds a team-low in WHIP at 1.35. Graduate student Will Melby Jr. (Munster, Ind.), Geisler, and LeFrancois are all tied for the most wins on the team with three. Martinez remains ranked first on the team for saves with four. Mucciarone has pitched in the most innings (55.2) on the team, while senior Brian Foley (Milton, Mass.) has tossed the most strikeouts on the team at 49.

CHANCE GARNERS SECOND AMERICA EAST ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Cal Chance was recognized by the America East last week for his strong offensive showing, earning his second America East Rookie of the Week award this season. The freshman went 11-for-18 for a .611 batting average, while scoring five runs and driving in seven. The Connecticut native also tallied two doubles and posted a .722 slugging percentage along with a .650 on-base percentage.  

HIGH-HIT GAMES THIS SEASON (10+ HITS)
Through 39 games this season, the River Hawks have tallied 10+ hits in 17 contests. UMass Lowell holds a 9–8 record in those games, with a season-high 21 hits coming in a non-conference matchup against San Francisco on Saturday, March 7.

MATCHUPS FEATURING 10+ STRIKEOUTS
Across 39 games this season, UMass Lowell has registered 10+ strikeouts in 10 outings, compiling a 5–5 record in those contests. UMass Lowell's highest single-game total during the 2026 season came on Saturday, February 14, when the team notched 12 strikeouts against Morehead State.

AE OVERALL PLAYER STATISTICAL RANKS
At this stage in conference play, O'Leary ranks eighth in the America East for on-base plus slugging percentage at .949, while also sitting in 10th for batting average at .318, and 10th for slugging percentage at .527. O'Leary is also ranked second in the America East for runs scored at 44, as Masse is behind in fourth with 39 runs scored. Chance is currently ranked tied for third in the conference for hits with 49, as O'Leary sits in sixth with 47, Martinez sits in ninth with 45, and DeLanzo and Masse are both tied for 10th with 42 hits. Martinez is tied for fifth in the America East for runs batted in with 33, while O'Leary is behind in 10th at 31 RBI. Martinez is also tied for first in doubles with 13, as Chance is tied for seventh at 10 doubles. O'Leary is also currently tied for fifth in home runs (7) in the conference. 

Geisler now ranks seventh in the America East for earned run average at 4.65, while  Mucciarone is sitting ninth for earned run average at 5.17. Mucciarone is also ranked fourth in the conference for innings pitched with 55.2. Foley continues to be ranked in the top three in the America East for total strikeouts, sitting in third with 49, as Mucciarone ranks seventh with 40. Melby Jr., LeFrancois, and Geisler are all tied for seventh in the conference for wins with three each. Martinez is currently tied for second in saves in the America East with four.

For overall team rankings in the conference, the River Hawks are ranked second for batting average (.276).

MATCHUP HISTORY
Boston College owns a 10–2 overall record over UMass Lowell in the all-time series. The River Hawks matched up against the Eagles once so far this season, falling in a 12–2 outcome on March 18, 2026. In the all-time series against Stony Brook, the Seawolves hold a 21-12 advantage over the River Hawks. UMas Lowell sits at a 7–9 home record versus Stony Brook, with the Seawolves securing the most recent matchup in a 10–9 decision on March 20, 2022.
