LOWELL, Mass. – Junior
Johnny Soi (Kerhonkson, N.Y.) scored four goals, as the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (2-9, 0-5 AE) fell to the Vermont Catamounts (5-6, 3-2 AE), 14-10, on Senior Day.
"Really, really grateful to have three great seniors who, on one of the youngest teams in the country, they're men, and they've done a great job of helping our guys get acclimated to college and college lacrosse," said Head Coach
Drew Kelleher. "Just so proud of them. Losing stinks, but the guys are playing so hard, I'm so proud of them. We're just going to keep building."
Soi, who tallied his second hat trick of the season, was one of eight River Hawks to record a point in the contest. Freshman
Danny Burke (Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored twice, while junior
Colby Frigon (Providence, R.I.) added a goal and an assist, and junior
Jayden Consigli (Franklin, Mass.) totaled two assists. Junior
Nolan Marshall (Oakville, Ontario), redshirt sophomore
James Donnelly (Ottawa, Ontario), and sophomore
Griffin Sumwalt (Aquebogue, N.Y.) each scored once, while sophomore
Alex Lafreniere (Chelmsford, Mass.) rounded things out with an assist. In net, junior
Scott Kosakowski (Westport, Ct.) made ten saves.
The Catamounts started the game strong, netting the first two goals of the game in the opening three minutes. It didn't take long for the River Hawks to respond, though, as Frigon dished a pass to Marshall, who ripped a shot between the opposing keepers' legs, cutting the deficit in half. Moments later, the host struck again, this time off the stick of Frigon with an assist from Lafreniere, evening the score up at 2-2 with 7:50 on the clock. In response, Vermont scored twice to take a 4-2 lead into the second quarter.
In the second, the visitors picked up where they left off, scoring two goals to extend the lead to 6-2. UMass Lowell refused to back down, as Donnelly capitalized on a penalty by Vermont, sneaking a shot past the opposition to make it a three-goal difference. The Catamounts locked in, scoring five straight to take their largest lead yet, but a goal by Soi and Sumwalt in the final two minutes of the period cut the deficit to 11-5 heading into halftime.
Bringing momentum from the end of the half with them, UMass Lowell came out firing in the third quarter, as Soi struck with 12:04 on the clock before adding a second goal four minutes later, pulling his squad back within four, 11-7. The Catamounts hit their stride, though, scoring three unanswered to own a 14-7 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
In the fourth, looking to help his squad pull off a comeback, Soi added his fourth goal of the night while Burke added a pair of goals, but the Vermont defense fended off any more opportunities for the River Hawks, sealing the 14-10 decision.
Next up, the River Hawks hit the road for the final game of the season when they visit the Bryant Bulldogs on Saturday, April 25. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Beirne Stadium in Smithfield, Rhode Island.
