River Hawks Fight Hard at Both Friar Invitational and Tufts Spring Invitational

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell men's track and field team split up and competed at both the Friar Invitational at Providence and day one of the Tufts Spring Invitational at Tufts on Friday.

Senior Basit Iddriss (Milford, Mass.) got the track events started, claiming sixth place in the 400m dash out of 12 with a time of 49.76. Next was the 800m open, where freshman Joshua Toth (Milton, Mass.) led the River Hawks with a 15th place performance out of 40 runners with a time of 1:54.77, just ahead of junior Dennis Satchek (Boston, Mass.) in 16th with a 1:54.94 mark. Sophomore Sean Kerin (Walpole, Mass.) was next in 20th with a 1:55.25 mark, while sophomore Tyler Rothrock (Allentown, Pa.), freshman Abdul Jalloh (Lowell, Mass.), junior Pedro Mayol (Lincoln, R.I.) and junior Declan Mulligan (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) also competed to round out the squad.

Six River Hawks finished within the top 21 of the 56-runner one mile open, and it was graduate student Nate DeAngelo (Bristol, Conn.) that led the way with an impressive third-place finish and 4:11.62 mark. Fellow graduate student Will Benoit (Fairhaven, Mass.) followed him up in 13th with a time of 4:14.94, before four River Hawks rounded out the top 21. Sophomore Jamie Lano (Strafford, N.H.) claimed 16th with a 4:15.40 mark, before sophomore Tyler Young (Marion, Mass.) and freshman Will Conklin (Danvers, Mass.) finished back-to-back in 18th and 19th place, respectively, with times of 4:16.88 and 4:16.90. Graduate student Landen Vaillancourt (New Ipswich, N.H.) crossed in 21st, earning a 4:17.55 mark.

Two River Hawks competed in the 19-person 3,000m steeplechase, with junior David McKinnon (Bloomsbury, N.J.) leading the way in 10th with a 9:21.91 mark. In 19th was junior Nicolas Uzzo (East Bridgewater, Mass.) with a time of 9:57.20.

Two River Hawks competed in the one mile invitational, and graduate student Andrew Benassi (Reading, Mass.) finished in 19th out of 29 against tough competition with a time of 4:10.80, while freshman Will Simard (Francestown, N.H.) claimed 27th with a 4:15.10 mark.

Junior Dean Allen (Chelmsford, Mass.) and graduate student Timothy Brigham (Holden, Mass.) finished consecutively in 16th and 17th place, respectively, in the 3,000m run, with times of 9:06.64 and 9:07.73 to round out the track events.

In the field events, sophomore Camren Allain (Carver, Mass.) finished first in the high jump, clearing 1.95m, while graduate student Luke Stelmach (Sterling, Mass.) was just behind him with a 1.90m mark for second place.

At Tufts, the decathlon athletes competed in the first five events of the weekend, as junior Brandon Riley (Weymouth, Mass.) won the 100m dash with a 10.94 mark, before freshman John Kivlan took fourth out of 18 with a time of 11.40 and graduate student Derek Munroe (Tewksbury, Mass.) claimed ninth with an 11.47 mark. Riley then finished second in the long jump with a 6.92m mark, while Kivlan tied for fourth with a 6.56m leap and Munroe rounded it out in sixth at 6.53m.

Munroe went on to win the shot put with a toss of 14.11m, while Riley claimed fifth with an 11.41m mark and Kivlan finished seventh with a 10.99m mark. Kivlan continued his solid day with a third-place performance in the high jump, clearing 1.82m, before Riley tied for fourth at 1.79m and Munroe finished in seventh with a 1.76m mark.

The decathlon 400m closed out day one of the Tufts Invitational, and Riley won with a 50.08 mark, with Munroe just behind him in second with a time of 50.78. Kivlan finished in 14th with a 55.28 mark.

"The group took advantage of the great weather today," said Associate Head Coach Ally Waruch. "I am happy with everyone's day one as a whole. They are all in a good position to score at the end of day two. Brandon has been battling through a nagging injury, so we have to be careful and take fewer attempts in jumping events right now. His maturity and overall fitness is something new he can rely on now."
