TOWSON, Md. – The UMass Lowell softball team wrapped up play at the Towson Tiger Invite on Sunday with a pair of shutout victories, defeating Central Connecticut, 9–0, before taking down Coppin State, 5–0. The River Hawks finished the weekend with three consecutive shutouts and improved to 8–7 on the season.
"It was a great weekend and I thought we really put all the pieces together," said head coach Jen Starek. "We had strong pitching, played great defense and the bats were hot."
Junior Madi Wade (Hagerstown, Md.) paced the River Hawks at the plate on Sunday, going 5-for-7 across the two games with two RBI. Junior Isabel Quintanilla (Puyallup, Wash.) drove in a team-high three runs, while freshman Julia Rowley (Beacon Falls, Conn.) added two hits on the day, including a home run in the opener.
In the circle, senior Giana LaCedra (Tyngsborough, Mass.) tossed a complete-game effort against Central Connecticut, allowing just three hits while striking out six. Freshman Grace Rowan (Hood River, Ore.) and junior Olivia DeCitise (Troy, N.Y.) combined to limit Coppin State to two hits in the afternoon game.
Game 1: UMass Lowell 9, CCSU 0
UMass Lowell took control early with a four-run second inning. Caroline Calkins (Orting, Wash.) started the rally with a double before RBI hits from Emily Baumes (Rexford, N.Y.) and Wade pushed the River Hawks ahead. A bases-loaded walk from Avery Spinello-Branch (Lorton, Va.) and Wade's two-run single capped the inning and stretched the lead to 4–0.
The River Hawks continued to build the advantage in the fifth. Quintanilla delivered an RBI single before Ella Van Alstyne (Beacon Falls, Conn.) followed with a run-scoring double to extend the lead to 6–0.
Lowell added three more runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Rowley launched a solo home run before Quintanilla doubled home two more runs to make it 9–0.
Meanwhile, LaCedra kept the Blue Devils quiet throughout the afternoon, scattering three hits across six innings while striking out six.
Game 2: UMass Lowell 5, Coppin State 0
The River Hawks opened the scoring in the second inning when Rowan came around to score on a wild pitch after reaching base earlier in the frame.
Lowell doubled the lead in the third as Elizabeth Neeld (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) drove home Baumes with a double to right center.
The River Hawks created separation in the sixth inning. Kate Hardy (Alexandria, Va.) delivered an RBI single before Rowley added another run-scoring hit. A wild pitch later in the frame brought home another run to extend the lead to 5–0.
Rowan worked the first three innings in the circle before DeCitise entered in relief and struck out five over the final four innings to close out the victory.
