LOWELL, Mass. – Senior
Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.) posted a team-high five points, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (4-7, 0-2 AE) fell 16-10 to the Bryant Bulldogs (7-4, 2-0 AE) in the team's first home conference game of the season.
"A bit of a broken record here," said Head Coach
Lisa Miller. "We are competing. We had players who made and were trying to make plays. We need to keep scrapping, trying to come up with draw control and clear the ball. We are playing good defense and scoring consistently. Need to find a way to generate more offensive possessions."
Shultz, who finished with three goals and two assists, was one of six River Hawks to record at least a goal in the contest. Senior
Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) sat right behind her with two goals and two assists, while junior
Bronwyn Hilbert (Lancaster, Pa.) added three points off a goal and two assists. Junior
Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) added a pair of goals, while sophomore
Georgia Ruscitti (Toronto, Ontario) and redshirt freshman
Chiara Pompei (Catonsville, Md.) each tallied a goal.
The River Hawks went straight to work, as Hilbert found Shultz open for the first goal of the contest just over a minute in. Only a few minutes later, the hosts struck again, this time with Lydon finding the back of the net off a Hilbert assist, putting her squad in front 2-0. The Bulldogs retaliated with haste, though, scoring four straight to take a 4-2 lead into the second quarter.
Although Bryant struck again to open the second period, the River Hawks answered immediately, using a goal by Shultz at the 12:55 mark to make it a two-goal deficit. Over the next five minutes, the Bulldogs added three straight to make it an 8-3 game, but Hilbert put a stop to the stretch with her first goal moments later. With momentum on their side, the hosts' offense caught fire, scoring four of the next five goals, highlighted by two from Bowers as well as one from Lydon and Pompei, making it a one-goal difference, 9-8, heading into halftime.
After a Bryant goal opened the second half, UMass Lowell locked down defensively, holding the opposition scoreless for nearly six minutes. The Bulldogs eventually broke through, though, scoring at the 8:13 mark before adding two more goals to own a 13-8 lead heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth, the River Hawks attempted to pull off a comeback, as Ruscitti and Shultz each tallied a goal, but the visitors added three of their own, sealing the 16-10 decision.
Next up, the River Hawks hit the road again, this time visiting the Binghamton Bearcats next Saturday, April 4. Opening draw is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the Bearcats Sports Complex in Vestal, New York.
