VESTAL, N.Y. – Freshman Cal Chance (Wolcott, Conn.) registered two hits, two RBI and two runs, as the UMass Lowell baseball team (8-9) battled to a 16–10 setback at Binghamton (7-11) in game two of the series on Saturday afternoon.
"Lost control in the middle innings," said Head Coach Nick Barese. "Any time a team puts up a 7 spot it's hard to get back into it. But our bats showed zero quit. I'm impressed with how we got ourselves back into the game. Need to do everything we can to win the series tomorrow."
Senior Joseph DeLanzo (Nutley, N.J.) and graduate student Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) also tallied multi-hit performances, as DeLanzo hit 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI and Burgos went 2-for-4 with a double and one run. Redshirt-sophomore Sean O'Leary (Foxboro, Mass.) recorded a double and four RBI in the contest, as well. Senior Brian Foley (Milton, Mass.) started on the bump, pitching 3.2 innings with three strikeouts, while freshman Christopher Klueber (Bourne, Mass.) tossed 2.0 innings, keeping the opposition hitless and scoreless.
The Bearcats jumped out to a two-run lead in the opening inning. Burgos then reached on a walk to lead off the second, however Binghamton kept UMass Lowell from capitalizing. After the home side added another run in the bottom of the inning, DeLanzo and senior Zachary Scott (Lunenburg, Mass.) started the third by each knocking a single before Chance seized cracked an RBI double to right field to score DeLanzo and cut the difference to 3–1. Junior Rowan Masse (Manchester, Conn.) and O'Leary came next in the order, both recording RBI after hitting sacrifice flies to even the score at 3–3.
UMass Lowell had two runners on in the top of the fourth, but Binghamton went on to score seven runs in the home half to regain its lead, 10–3. The Bearcats would also add three more runs in the fifth to make it 13–3 before freshman Josh Doney (Lynn, Mass.) caught the last batter swinging to wrap up the frame.
The River Hawks kicked off the sixth with a single from senior Carlos Martinez (Coamo, Puerto Rico). Junior Scott Donahue (Medfield, Mass.) up at-bat now, fought the count to walk with two outs on the board, before DeLanzo and Chance each knocked one-run singles, and Masse drew a four-ball count to tally an RBI for a seven-run difference, 13–6. O'Leary, next at the plate, waited until the third pitch to smack a double to center field, scoring three runs to pull his side within four at 13–9. The Bearcats answered right away, though, pushing their lead back to 16–9.
UMass Lowell kept up the attack, beginning the seventh inning with a single by Burgos. Next, Donahue ripped a double down, driving in the graduate student. Klueber, on the mound now in the seventh, fronted a 1-2-3 inning, and then controlled the bump once again in the eighth, allowing no hits or runs. The River Hawks mounted one final rally in the ninth, starting with Burgos' double to center field, but the Bearcats eventually closed the inning, securing the 16–10 decision.
The River Hawks return tomorrow, March 22, for the series finale against Binghamton at the Bearcats Baseball Complex in Vestal, N.Y, with the contest set to begin at 1 p.m.
