PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior
Johnny Soi (Kerhonkson, N.Y.) scored two goals as the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (2-5) fell to the Brown University Bears (4-3), 13-6, in Tuesday's non-conference contest.
"I thought we got a much more complete effort today on the short turn around," commented Head Coach
Drew Kelleher. "We've got a break here to reset our identity and get it right going into the bulk of league play."
In addition to Soi's pair of goals, sophomores
Danny Burke (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and
Alex Lafreniere (Chelmsford, Mass.) both tallied a goal and an assist. Freshman
Ryan Proctor (Uxbridge, Ontario) and sophomore
Griffin Sumwalt (Aquebogue, N.Y.) also added their names to the scoresheet for the River Hawks with a goal each, while junior
Nolan Marshall (Oakville, Ontario) added an assist. Â
The Bears started the contest strong, scoring the first three goals of the afternoon. UMass Lowell, however, refused to back down early, as Lafreniere scored with 3:57 on the clock, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Brown fired right back, adding two goals to take a 5-1 lead into the second quarter.
In the second, the River Hawks showed signs of resurgence, as Burke scored the first goal of the period at 11:06 to make it a 5-2 game. Meanwhile, the visitors' defense stood strong, not allowing a goal for nearly seven minutes of action, but the Bears finally got back on the board, adding a trio of goals to extend their lead to six. Moments later, with 2:47 on the clock, Soi struck for his first goal of the game, but the opposition added one with 21 seconds to spare to take a 9-3 lead into the break.
Coming out of halftime, both teams focused on defense, as the period remained scoreless for nearly five minutes. Despite the hosts ending the drought at 10:18, UMass Lowell retaliated with haste, as Lafreniere dished out a pass to Sumwalt, who ripped his shot into the back of the net, making it a 10-4 game. The strong defensive play continued over the next seven minutes, as the score remained the same entering the final quarter.
In the fourth, the River Hawks looked to make a comeback attempt with goals by Proctor and Soi, but Brown added three of their own, sealing the 13-6 decision.
Next up, the River Hawks will aim to bounce back as they host UAlbany on Saturday, March 28. Opening face-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Cushing Field.
