UMass Lowell Comes Up Short to End BU Round Robin

BOSTON – The UMass Lowell softball team (9-13) wrapped up play at the BU Round Robin on Sunday, falling 7-0 to Brown in the opener before dropping a 9-0 decision to host Boston University in the finale.

"We got good experience against tough competition this weekend, and that's something we can carry with us moving forward," said head coach Jen Starek. "Now it's about turning the page to Merrimack and getting ready for conference play this weekend."

Sophomore Madi Wade (Hagerstown, Md.) recorded Lowell's lone hit in the first game with a double down the right-field line, while sophomore Thyanais Santiago (Methuen, Mass.) notched the team's only hit against Boston University with a single in the second inning.

In the circle, senior Giana LaCedra (Tyngsborough, Mass.) got the start against Brown and struck out four over 5.0 innings. Junior Olivia DeCitise (Troy, N.Y.) added three strikeouts in 2.0 innings of relief in the opener before starting the second game. Freshmen Jessika Jennings (Roy, Wash.) and Ella Van Alstyne (Beacon Falls, Conn.) also saw action in the finale.

Game 1: UMass Lowell 0, Brown 7
The River Hawks and Bears were locked in a scoreless game through the first three innings. Wade gave Lowell its first hit of the morning with a double down the right-field line in the second, but Brown pitcher Macy Borowski kept the River Hawks off the board.

Brown broke through in the top of the fourth when Lily Burns hit a two-run home run to left field for a 2-0 advantage.

The Bears added to their lead in the sixth. Amanda Deng delivered a two-run double through the left side before Elli Thompson followed with a three-run home run down the right-field line to extend the margin to 7-0.

Lowell was unable to answer in the bottom half, as Brown secured the shutout victory.

Game 2: UMass Lowell 0, Boston University 9
The second game remained scoreless through the first two innings, although the River Hawks threatened in the top of the second. Santiago singled for Lowell's first hit of the game, and the visitors put runners in scoring position, but Boston University escaped the inning without damage.

The Terriers broke the game open in the bottom of the third, sending eight runs across the plate. Kylie Doherty started the scoring with a two-run single, Camryn Lyons added an RBI double, Kyomi Apalit drove in another run with a single and Kieren McHugh capped the inning with a three-run home run to right.

Boston University added one more in the fourth on a solo home run from Megan Coyle to seal the 9-0 final.

Up Next
The River Hawks continue their road stretch on Wednesday with a midweek matchup at Merrimack before returning home for their home opener and America East opener against Maine on Saturday and Sunday.
