River Hawks Ready To Take on 2026 Campaign

2/5/2026 12:00:00 PM

LOWELL, Mass. – Entering his fourth season in charge at UMass Lowell, men’s lacrosse head coach Drew Kelleher has his team prepared to take another step forward during the 2026 campaign. The River Hawks will get their season started on Friday, February 6, when they host Quinnipiac at Cushing Field.

We’re pumped to get going. We’ve had a good first week with a lot of new energy within our coaching staff, with two great new pieces. The players came back in great shape, and we’re just ready to get going.

Although the team is made up of large freshmen and sophomore classes, the team returns one four-year member in redshirt junior Devin German (Acton, Mass.), a pair of seniors in Jackson Rudo (Owings Mills, Md.) and Jonny Seero (Dorchester, Mass.), as well as five captains in juniors Josh Adey (Victoria, B.C.), Owen Fitzgerald (Calverton, N.Y.), Colby Frigon (Providence, R.I.), Jackson Schlicker (Portland, Ore.), and Johnny Soi (Kerhonkson, N.Y.) to help lead the squad.

The River Hawks return eight of their top ten scorers from last season, including sophomore Danny Burke (Eden Prairie, Minn.), who paced the team with 32 points and 15 assists, and Soi, who led last year’s squad with a career-high 22 goals. Ranking fifth in scoring during the 2025 season, Frigon returns for his third year and will look to build off his 22-point total from last season.

On defense, UMass Lowell returns its primary goalkeeper, sophomore AJ True (Manchester, N.H.), who started 11 of 12 games and made 134 saves last season. In front of him, Fitzgerald, Adey, and sophomores Jack Jimenez (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), Miles Kempski (West Chester, Pa.), and Trevor Galgano (South Huntington, N.Y.) will look to anchor the defense after leading the team in caused turnovers in 2025.

The River Hawks also roster three faceoff specialists, all of whom saw time during the 2025 campaign. Leading the way, junior Justin Alexander (Franklin, Mass.) posted a .534 faceoff percentage after going 135-253 at the X during his sophomore season. Junior Owen McIntee (Northport, N.Y.)  enters his second season at UMass Lowell with 10 faceoff wins in his career, while German provides a veteran experience to the unit.

The coaching staff was hard at work during the offseason, bringing in 11 freshmen to round out the roster. The group, which brings in a variety of talents and energy, will look to help the team earn an America East playoff berth.

After opening up the season against Quinnipiac, the River Hawks will face a handful of familiar non-conference opponents, taking on Mercyhurst, Wagner, Holy Cross, Massachusetts, and Queens University of Charlotte.

The squad then opens up America East action on March 14 at Binghamton. They then face a quick turnaround when they visit Brown to close out non-conference action, followed by home games against UAlbany and UMBC. After a trip to NJIT, the team hosts Vermont on Senior Day, before wrapping up the regular season at Bryant on April 25.

For us we want to be banging on the door of a playoff berth in the league. I think it’s realistic for us, and I think if we stay healthy and continue to improve, we have a really good chance to compete for a playoff spot in a really good league.
