PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite battling through more than 62 minutes of scoreless action, the UMass Lowell field hockey team (6-5) fell, 1-0, at Providence (9-3) on Sunday afternoon.Â
Â
Sophomore Megan MacMiller (Tarzana, Calif.) made four saves throughout the second half and overtime period before Providence's Carly van Benten tipped in a cross from Ariana Ftorek on a breakaway to end the game in the 63rd minute.
Â
"We battled today," said Head Coach Shannon LeBlanc. "On the road against a strong Big East team, we showed up to compete. I saw another big step forward for this team in their resilience and their ability to adapt quickly. Of course, we want a couple of those corners back that we missed by inches, but winning is in the details and we know that, so we will dial in this week as we prepare for Vermont."
Â
Senior Karli Penrod (Seaford, Del.) paced the River Hawks on the offensive end with two shots on the day, including one on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Veerle Mous (Breda, Netherlands) added one save in the first half.
Â
The Friars tested Mous less than a minute into the game on a corner play, but the keeper made the kick save. UMass Lowell responded in the fourth minute when sophomore Alexa Guarneri (Hockessin, Del.)Â ripped a shot just wide on the run. In the sixth minute. Penrod put an attempt on goal that was stopped by the PC keeper, as the teams remained scoreless heading into the second quarter.
Â
The team's traded corners to start the second before the home side earned three in a row, however the River Hawk defense extinguished the opportunities to send the game into halftime even at 0-0.
Â
In the 36th minute, junior Audrey Carter (Dover, N.H.) drove a hard shot on cage during the first corner of the second half, but was unable to beat the keeper. With the defenses for both sides controlling the action, neither side would register a shot for the remainder of the third quarter.
Â
Providence pressured in the final quarter of regulation, as the attack was able to put four attempts on target, but MacMiller stopped them all to force the extra time.
Â
The River Hawks are now set to visit America East Conference foe Vermont on Friday, October 9 at 3 p.m.
