BURLINGTON, Vt. – The UMass Lowell field hockey team (6-6, 1-1 AE) faced a tough, 1-0 setback on the road at Vermont (9-2, 1-1 AE) on Friday.

Sophomore goalkeeper Veerle Mous (Breda, Netherlands) matched a season high with six saves in the contest, while classmate Megan MacMiller (Tarzana. Calif.) added two stops in the second half.

The River Hawks controlled the ball for the majority of the first quarter, but neither side was able to record an attempt in the first 15 minutes of action.

The game saw its first shot 20 minutes in, when Vermont's Addie DelOrefice sent a reverse stick attempt high. The River Hawk defense went to work throughout the remainder of the quarter, thwarting five shots on goal and three corners to send the game into the break scoreless.

Coming out of halftime, the home side would break open the scoring in the 34^th minute, though, as Consu de Castro redirected a ball of Veerle Nijhuis.

The River Hawks earned their first corner chance in the 50^th minute and attacked with a shot on target by senior Karli Penrod (Seaford, Del.), but the UVM keeper made the stop, and although junior Audrey Carter (Dover, N.H.) fired a follow up attempt, it sailed just high. UMass Lowell pulled its keeper inside the final five minutes for an extra field player in hopes of erasing the difference, but the home team was able to hold on for the 1-0 decision.

The River Hawks are back in action on Sunday, October 11 when they host Sacred Heart at 1 p.m. for Youth Day.
