BOSTON, Mass. – After leading his team in scoring and rebounding last week, junior
Angel Montas Jr. (La Romana, Dominican Republic) has been named the America East Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday morning.
Over two games, Montas Jr. averaged 20.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists, propelling the UMass Lowell men's basketball team to a 1-1 week, including a win in the conference opener. The junior began the week with a career-high 23 points on 10-for-12 shooting, alongside six rebounds, three assists and two steals against No. 25 Iowa on December 29. He then followed up that performance with 18 points and a team-best nine rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal in the team's victory against America East foe UAlbany.
For his efforts, Montas Jr. was also named River Hawk of the Week for the first time. The "River Hawk of the Week" is chosen in voting by the UMass Lowell Athletic Communications staff. It honors the top athlete, male or female, based on performance during the previous week of competition.
So far this season, Montas Jr. has impressed, averaging 9.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game, including averaging 15.3 points and 7.0 rebounds over six games since taking on a starting role.
