River Hawks Take on Day Two at John Thomas Terrier Classic

BOSTON, Mass. – The UMass Lowell men's indoor track and field team wrapped up its January schedule Saturday at Boston University, competing in day two of the John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston, Mass.

"It was a great day and the guys leveled up as a group today," said Head Coach Gary Gardner. "From the 800 through the 5,000 we had a host of personal bests."

The River Hawks competed in one field event, as freshman Kevin Vigneault (Jamesville, N.Y.) led UMass Lowell in the shot put event, throwing for a 15.56m mark for 7th place, before graduate student Ian Camerato (Mount Laurel, N.J.) placed 8th at a mark of 14.95m and freshman Reznor Rokicki (Loveland, Oh.) in 10th place with a toss of 14.44m. Also competing for UMass Lowell, freshman Kenny Kalvinek (Sutton, Mass.) finished in 11th at a mark of 14.31m and senior Mukanya Kazadi (Woburn, Mass.) claimed 13th with a mark of 13.93m. 

In the running events, the 400m kicked it off, and sophomore Michael Fisher (Wallingford, Conn.) shined, finishing in sixth place out of 29 runners with a personal-best time of 47.50. Senior Tristan O'Riorden finished in 18th place with a time of 48.92. The 500m followed, and freshman Abdul Jalloh (Lowell, Mass.) represented the River Hawks and finished in 13th with a personal-best time of 1:06.38. 

The 800m open event was next, as junior Dennis Satchek (Boston, Mass.) led the River Hawks with a 32nd-place finish at a time of 1:54.25. Sophomore Tyler Rothrock (Allentown, Pa.) also competed in the 800m, finishing in 90th with a 1:58.28 mark. Next was the 1,000m, where freshman Jacob Szalewicz shined, finishing in 11th place out of 62 with a personal-best time of 2:25.36. Sophomore Tyler Young (Marion, Mass.) was next, claiming 23rd with a personal-best 2:28.62 mark, before junior Pedro Mayol (Lincoln, R.I.) finished in 29th with a personal-best time of 2:30.64. Freshman Jackson Beauparlant rounded out the River Hawks in 42nd place with a time of 2:33.14. 

230 runners competed in the mile, and senior Andrew Benassi (Reading, Mass.) led the team with a 57th-place performance and time of 4:09.59, while sophomore Jamie Lano (Strafford, N.H.) claimed 103rd with a personal-best 4:16.66 mark. Freshman Joshua Toth (Milton, Mass.) was next in 122nd place, finishing with a 4:19.74 mark, before senior Joshua Rivers (Manchester, N.H.) finished in 191st place with a time of 4:31.53.

The 3,000m event included 12 River Hawk runners, with sophomore Devin Moreau (Tyngsboro, Mass.) crossing first for UMass Lowell, finishing in 47th out of 216 competitors at a time of 8:07.39. Staying attached, sophomore Isaac Henderson punched in at 8:12.57 for 59th, graduate student Will Benoit (Fairhaven, Mass.) took 62nd at 8:14.05, and graduate student Jan Wouter Van Den Akker (Groningen, Netherlands) claimed 65th with a time of 8:14.52. Freshman Will Simard (Francestown, N.H.) was next in 74th place at 8:17.66 before senior Ethan Mashtare (St. Albans, Vt.) finished in 79th at 8:19.07, and graduate student Nate DeAngelo (Bristol, Conn.) claimed 83rd place at 8:20.75. Close by, sophomore Jack Courtney finished in 101st at a time of 8:29.15, freshman Will Conklin (Danvers, Mass.) took 103st at 8:29.48, and sophomore Patrick Hall (Billerica, Mass.) followed in 113th at 8:32.39. Rounding out the River Hawks, freshman Chris Guerin (Shrewsbury, Mass.) (135th, 8:39.07) and junior Dean Allen (Chelmsford, Mass.) (171st, 8:46.17). Junior Nicholas Marcotte (Hudson, N.H.) ran hard in the 5,000m event, placing in 43rd out of 90 runners after clocking in at 14:31.42. 

The team prepares to host the River Hawk Invite, beginning next Friday, February 6, at the TRACK at New Balance in Boston, Mass.
