River Hawks Use Late Goal To Take Down Holy Cross, 2-1

WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Henry Wohlt (Milwaukee, Wis.) scored the first goal of his career, as the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (3-1-1) took down the Holy Cross Crusaders (0-3-1), 2-1, to finish undefeated during the three-game road trip.
"That was a great win on the road," said Head Coach Kyle Zenoni. "I thought we were good in the first half but started very slow in the second. They had many shots in the first 15-20 minutes in the second half and gave us everything they had. Happy we got through it. We showed a lot of character after they scored to come back and win the game. At the end of the day a win is a win and it's hard to win in college soccer. We made it hard on ourselves in the second half, but overall I did feel we deserved to win the game and I'm happy for the guys. The opportunities that were created were from us turning the ball over in our own half. We need to clean that part up as we move forward, which we will. Now we need to rest up and get ready for a huge game at home finally against UMass."
Wohlt, whose goal proved to be the difference in the match, found the back of the net with just over ten minutes to play. Joining him with a goal on the night was senior Iñaki Esnaola (Junin, Argentina), who scored his first of the season. Redshirt sophomore Justin Pham (Liverpool, N.Y.) and sophomore Cristiano Da Silva (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) each added an assist. In net, freshman Alvaro Medrano (Guatemala City, Guatemala) made seven saves.
Although the Crusaders registered the first shot of the match just over three minutes in, it didn't take long for the River Hawks to open the scoring. Almost eight minutes into the match, Pham dished a pass into the middle of the box for Esnaola, who connected with the perfect touch off the right foot, tipping the ball into the top right corner over the keeper's reach, putting the hosts in front 1-0. Even with the lead, UMass Lowell continued to put the pressure on Holy Cross, outshooting the opposition 3-0 by the 25th minute, but the hosts' defense stayed strong, keeping it a one-goal game.
As the first half began to wind down, the River Hawks continued to dominate in possession, adding two more shots to bring the total to 6-1 in their favor. Looking to add to their total, UMass Lowell nearly doubled their lead in the 36th minute when Pham lofted the ball high right in front of the net. Junior Alex Champagne (Pembroke Pines, Fl.) dashed in, jumping up to head the ball towards the net, but it soared just over the crossbar. The visitors continued to dominate in the final minutes, but the lead remained 1-0 heading into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Crusaders found a rhythm on offense, rattling off the first eleven shots of the half by the 60-minute mark. Medrano, however, was up for the challenge, making five great saves while the defense made a pair of blocks to keep Holy Cross off the board. The hosts were able to finally break through, though, finding the back of the net with 60:28 on the clock, evening the score at 1-1 with just under 30 minutes to go.
Despite momentum being on the Crusaders' side, UMass Lowell continued to battle, ripping off five of the game's next seven shots. Finally, with 79:18 on the clock, the visitors found another opportunity they were sure not to waste. After the River Hawks were awarded a corner, Da Silva placed the ball perfectly in front of the net, setting Wohlt up for the header, which he quickly buried for the first goal of his career, sealing the 2-1 victory for his squad.
Next up, the River Hawks return home to take on the Massachusetts Minutemen on Wednesday, September 10. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Cushing Field.
