River Hawks Wrap Up Homestand against Stonehill before Visiting New Haven

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (1-3-1) concludes the homestand at Cushing Field, hosting Stonehill (0-4-2) on September 11, kicking off at 6:00 p.m., before the River Hawks end the week with their final non-conference opponent, New Haven (0-4), on September 14 at 1:00 p.m.

Looking at UMass Lowell
The River Hawks hosted Boston University last Sunday, in the team's fourth straight home game, as the two sides battled it out to a 2-2 draw. Senior Hilary Jaén (Las Margaritas, Panama) recorded her first goal of the season. Junior Luka Marceau (Newton, Mass.) also posted her first goal of the season, helping tie the game for UMass Lowell. Freshman Emma Theorén (Sollentuna, Vällingby) added an assist, while senior Megan Banzi (Plymouth, Mass.) and sophomore Nina Hertz-Saebbö (Gothenburg, Sweden) each tallied their first assist of the season. Making her fifth start in goal this season, sophomore Rachel Welch (Franklin, Mass.) collected three saves on the day. 

Scouting the Skyhawks
Stonehill looks ahead to Thursday's matchup against UMass Lowell after playing at Fordham this past Thursday, falling in a 4-2 decision. Senior Hannah Anselmo recorded two goals in the contest against Fordham, while freshman Jenna Hamel got the start in net, tallying five saves. The Skyhawks are currently sitting at a 0-4-2 overall record, losing to two America East opponents, Vermont, 2-0, and Bryant, 1-0, while tying against New Hampshire in a 1-1 result. 

Anselmo currently leads the team in goals (3), points (6), and shots (12). Four different Skyhawks are tied for first on the team in assists (1), while freshman Dani Lomuscio has logged the most minutes (535) so far. Sophomore Allie Sougaris has made five starts in goal, registering 22 saves for a .733 save percentage. Hamel has seen two appearances, making one start in net, as the goalkeeper has collected five saves for a .556 save percentage. 

Scouting the Chargers
Entering this week, New Haven currently sits at a 0-4 overall record, as the Chargers fell in their most recent match, 3-1, against Marist on Tuesday. Junior Emma Mitchell recorded the lone goal in the contest against Marist, with sophomore Layla Coppola adding an assist on the play. Senior Caitlin Daley started in net, tallying seven saves during the match. 

Mitchell leads the team in goals (1) and points (2), while Coppola ranks first on the team in assists (1) and shots (2). Daley has logged the most minutes (350) on the team so far, while starting in all four games played, collecting 36 saves for a .720 save percentage. 

Stonehill Matchup History
The all-time series between the River Hawks and the Skyhawks sits at 3-2-3, with the most recent matchup ending in a 1-1 draw on August 31, 2023. UMass Lowell's home record against Stonehill sits at a 2-2-1 record. 

New Haven Matchup History
UMass Lowell prepares to match up against New Haven for the first time in DI history on Sunday. Both teams met in Division II five times, with UMass Lowell owning a 3-2 record during that era. The last time they battled, the Chargers took home a 2-1 victory on October 20, 2012. 

Leading the Flock
Senior Maddie Guthrie (Stow, Mass.) leads the team in assists (3) after six games, while ranking first on the team in minutes played (492). Theorén sits in second on the team in assists (2). Guthrie and Hertz-Saebbö are tied for first on the team in points with three each. Banzi follows in second behind Guthrie for most minutes registered (483).

Sophomore Gaby Eckroth (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), junior Marissa Sage (Milford, N.H.), freshman Kiera Fitzpatrick (Methuen, Mass.), freshman Anneliese Collin (Portland, Me.), Jaén, Hertz-Saebbö, and Marceau are all tied for the team lead in goals with one. 

Hertz-Saebbö has tallied the most shots on the team with 14, as Sage ranks second with 11 total shots. 

Between the Posts
Welch began the 2025 season in net for the River Hawks, starting in five matches. The Mass native has made 28 saves to earn a .737 save percentage in 360 minutes played, sitting at a 1-2-2 record on the season so far. 

Freshman Lucie Chumanová (Prague, Czech Republic) has started in one game this season, making nine saves to post a .692 save percentage. 

Around the America East
Hertz-Saebbö is ranked ninth in the conference in shots (14) and shots per game (2.33). 

Guthrie still sits near the top of the conference in assists, currently ranking second with three total assists and 0.500 assists per game. Theorén is tied for sixth in the America East in assists with two and assists per game with 0.333. 

In the goalkeeper rankings, Welch ranks first in saves per game with 5.60, while sitting in sixth for save percentage (.737), and third for both shutouts per game (.200) and shutouts (1) in the America East. 

As a team, UMass Lowell currently leads the conference in saves (38) and sits in fourth in the America East in assists (9) and assists per game (1.500).
