LOWELL, Mass. - After thoughtful evaluation and consultation with university leadership, UMass Lowell has decided to officially opt into the landmark NCAA House Settlement, as announced by Director of Athletics Lynn Coutts on Tuesday.

"This is a pivotal moment for college athletics, and we are committed to navigating it with transparency, integrity and a continued focus on student success," explained Coutts. "This decision positions us to remain aligned with national trends, while protecting the university from future legal exposure tied to the retroactive claims covered by the settlement. Most importantly, it provides us with the flexibility to design and implement student-athlete benefits in a way that fits our mission, values and resources."

In the coming months, UMass Lowell Athletics will begin working with its campus partners to explore how to approach this evolving model, focusing on what is best for the River Hawk student-athletes and the department's long-term sustainability.

"Opting in ensures we will stay competitive as the model shifts nationally, especially among our peers in America East, Hockey East and across the Division I level," concluded Coutts.
