Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

River Hawks Soar to 16-12 Victory Over UMBC to Secure Sole Possesssion of First Place

BALTIMORE, MD. – Sophomore Jillian Goldie (Owen Sound, Ontario) set a program record with a nine-point game, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (10-2, 4-0 AE) took down the UMBC Retrievers (10-2, 3-1 AE), 16-12, in the battle for first place on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the River Hawks continue their best start to conference play and a season in program history. They also own sole possession of first place in the America East, as they are the only remaining undefeated team in conference play.

Goldie, who tallied a career-high six goals as part of her nine-point day, was all over the box score, adding three assists, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Behind her, sophomore Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) finished with three goals and an assist for four points, while senior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) chipped in three goals, her fifth straight game with a hat trick. Junior Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) added two goals and an assist, while juniors Audra Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) and Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.) each finished with a goal. In net, sophomore Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) made nine saves to earn her tenth win of the season.

The River Hawks caught fire immediately, as Goldie struck with 12:49 on the clock to give her squad the early lead. Moments later, the sophomore struck again, putting her team in front 2-0 less than four minutes in. Although the hosts tallied their first goal just under the ten-minute mark, UMass Lowell continued the strong offensive start as Hansen added her first goal before Goldie completed the hat trick. UMBC added one more at the 4:02 mark, but Goldie's fourth goal, followed by Catlin's first of the day, gave the visitors a 6-2 lead after one.

After three minutes of lockdown defensive play from both sides to begin the second quarter, UMBC finally struck at 11:38, cutting the visitors' lead to 6-3. UMass Lowell responded with a vengeance though, as Goldie and Bowers both connected on free position shots, putting their squad in front by five. Despite the River Hawks not allowing a goal for just under ten minutes, the Retrievers added two in the final minutes to make it 8-5 heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, UMass Lowell went straight to work, using goals by Lydon and Bowers only 37 seconds apart to make it a five-goal difference, 10-5.  The hosts answered right back, scoring at the 10:16 mark, but a pair of goals by Catlin and Goldie quickly eliminated any momentum the Retrievers had. Continuing the strong defensive showing, a forced shot clock violation and a save by Kuhn kept UMBC off the board until the final two minutes of the quarter, where they added two to make it 12-8 heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth, the River Hawks came out firing as they looked to seal the win, scoring four of the next five goals, highlighted by a pair of assists from Goldie to set the program's single-game scoring record. Trailing 16-9 with five minutes to play, the Retrievers looked to make a comeback, adding a trio of goals, but UMass Lowell locked down in the final minutes to close out the 16-12 victory.

Next up, the River Hawks return home to host Binghamton on Senior Day on Saturday, April 12. The opening draw control is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Cushing Field.
