Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

River Hawks Fall to #25 Massachusetts, 18-7, on Tuesday Afternoon

AMHERST, Mass. – Junior Audra Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) tallied three points, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (11-4) fell to the #25 Massachusetts Minutewomen (12-3), 18-7, in the final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday afternoon.

Hansen, who finished the day with a pair of goals and an assist, was one of six River Hawks to record at least a point. Right behind her, senior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) scored twice, bringing her total goals to 49, breaking the previous program single-season record set last season. Junior Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.), sophomore Marlee Green (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.), and freshman Sydney Correll (West Grove, Pa.) all added a goal, while sophomore Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) rounded things out with an assist. In net, sophomore Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) made 11 saves.

The Minutewomen opened the game's scoring, stringing together three goals in the first four minutes to own an early 3-0 edge. The River Hawks didn't let it get to them though, as Lydon took advantage of a free position shot, firing the ball past the keeper to get her squad on the board. After a goal by the hosts extended the deficit back to three, Hansen found the back of the net for her first goal of the afternoon to make it a 4-2 game with 8:01 on the clock. Massachusetts answered, closing out the quarter with a three-goal scoring stretch to own a 7-2 lead after the first.

UMass Lowell got off to a hot start to begin the second, as Catlin tallied her first goal of the day just over a minute in to cut into the lead. Moments later, the senior added another, marking her 49th of the season, breaking the program record. After a goal by the opposition made it a four-score difference, 8-4, with 11:16 to play, Correll caught a pass from Hansen before ripping her shot past the keeper to pull her squad back within three. The Minutewomen finished the half strong, adding three in the final three minutes to own an 11-5 lead at the break.

Coming out of halftime, the hosts added to their lead, striking at the 13:40 mark. The River Hawks' defense proceeded to lock down, allowing only one goal over the next 12 minutes of play as they looked to pull closer. Meanwhile, the offense began to find its footing, as Bowers dished a pass over to Green, who bolted towards the net before unleashing a rocket into the top corner of the net to make it a 13-6 game just over halfway through the quarter. Both sides finished the third with excellent defensive play, but a goal by Massachusetts with 32 seconds to play gave them a 14-6 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.

Although Hansen added her second goal of the day in the fourth as the visitors tried to make a comeback, the Minutewomen denied all other scoring opportunities while adding four of their own, sealing the 18-7 final.

Next up, the River Hawks wrap up the regular season on Saturday, April 26, when they visit the Bryant Bulldogs in a clash for the top seed in the America East. The opening draw is scheduled for noon at the Bryant Track and Field Complex.
