River Hawks Face 15-8 Setback at Bryant

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Sophomore Jillian Goldie (Owen Sound, Ontario) tallied a team-high four goals, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (11-5, 5-1 AE) was tripped up by the Bryant Bulldogs (10-6, 5-1 AE), 15-8, on Saturday afternoon.

Finishing with a 5-1 record in conference play, the River Hawks were officially crowned America East Regular Season Co-Champions for the first time in program history.

Goldie, who has now recorded at least three points in ten of eleven games, was one of four River Hawks to tally at least a point in the match. Right behind her, sophomore Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) finished with a hat trick, while senior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) added a goal. Rounding things out, sophomore Marlee Green (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) chipped in with an assist. In net, sophomore Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) made nine saves.

The River Hawks went straight to work, as Bowers netted the first goal of the game at the 11:16 mark to put her team up early. Although Bryant responded 30 seconds later to knot the game up at 1-1, the visitors' offense answered with haste, as Catlin and Goldie both struck on free position shots to give their squad a 3-1 lead midway through the first. Moments later, a Bryant goal pulled the hosts back within one before Goldie found the back of the net again to regain a two-goal buffer, but a last-second goal by Bryant's Riley O'Mara cut the UMass Lowell lead to 4-3 heading into the second.

Both sides started the second quarter with strong offensive showings, as Bryant scored only 21 seconds into the period, followed by another goal off the stick of Bowers less than a minute later. The Bulldogs continued to attack though, as they added four more goals to take a three-goal advantage, 8-5, with just over six minutes on the clock. With 2:59 remaining, Bowers found another scoring opportunity, capitalizing on her third goal of the day to make it an 8-6 game heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, both sides locked down defensively, with the Bulldogs scoring the only goal in the first seven minutes of play. Although they added one more to make it 10-6, Goldie began to heat up for UMass Lowell, scoring twice in under two minutes to pull her team back within two. Bryant, however, refused to budge, adding one more goal to own a three-score advantage, 11-8, with 15 minutes to play.

In the final quarter, the hosts pulled away, scoring four goals to seal the 15-8 final score.

Next up, the River Hawks will return to Smithfield, R.I. to compete in the America East Playoffs as the #2 seed. The River Hawks will play on Friday, May 2, with game time and opponent to be determined.
