River Hawks Battle Binghamton, Falling 3-1 in Game Three

LOWELL, Mass. – Freshman Emily Baumes (Rexford, N.Y.) went 3-for-3 at the plate, as UMass Lowell (13-23, 5-9 AE) fell, 3-1, versus Binghamton (25-11, 11-2 AE) in America East play at River View Field on Saturday afternoon. Â
"I think we responded well to yesterday," said Head Coach Jen Starek. "We came out and played a lot harder and Giana was outstanding in the circle."Â
Baumes picked up the lone RBI on the day. Junior Katelyn Fitzgerald (Ambler, Pa.) was the other River Hawk to record a hit, going 1-for-2 at the plate. Junior Giana LaCedra pitched the full seven and struck out eight Bearcats. Â
Binghamton started its offense early with two hits in the top of the first to tally one run. LaCedra was able to limit the damage, as she struck out two. In the home half of the inning, Baumes ripped a single to short. Â
In the second inning, the Bearcats would grab two more runs to increase their lead to 3-0. However, UMass Lowell kept Binghamton to one baserunner in the third. In the bottom of the inning, freshman Kate Hardy (Alexandria, Va.) was hit by a pitch, allowing her to reach first. Freshman Grace Stepp (Richboro, Pa.) then laid down a sac bunt to move her to second. With a runner in scoring position, Baumes tapped a single into center, sending in a River Hawk run to cut the difference to 3-1.
LaCedra restricted the Bearcats to one hit in the fourth. In the home half of the inning, senior Emily Tow (North Kingstown, R.I.) was hit by a pitch, but the River Hawks were not able to add more baserunners.Â
Binghamton picked up another hit in the fifth, which was answered by some River Hawk offensive action in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Thyanais Santiago (Methuen, Mass.) reached first on a Bearcats' fielding error. This was followed by a well-placed single through the left side from Fitzgerald. Â
In the sixth, UMass Lowell retired Binghamton within three batters, with LaCedra picking up a strikeout. Baumes knocked a single to the pitcher in the home half of the inning, but no other River Hawks were able to reach first. Â
UMass Lowell held Binghamton to one hit for its final at-bat to keep the score within two. In the bottom of the seventh, Wade worked the count to earn herself a walk, but the River Hawks were unable to create more offense, resulting in a 3-1 loss to Binghamton.
The River Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, April 23 with a non-conference doubleheader versus Stonehill at River View Field with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
