River Hawks Fall, 7-5, at Bryant

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Freshman Emily Baumes (Rexford, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 at the plate, as UMass Lowell (11-20, 5-6 AE) fell, 7-5, to Bryant (13-23, 5-7 AE) in America East play at Conaty Park on Sunday afternoon.
Baumes also recorded an RBI and a walk on the day. Freshman Madi Wade (Hagerstown, Md.), freshman Kate Hardy (Alexandria, Va.) and junior Katelyn Fitzgerald (Ambler, Pa.) registered an RBI each. Freshman Avery Spinello-Branch grabbed a stolen base, making it her 14th of the season. Junior Giana LaCedra (Tyngsborough, Mass.) received the start in the circle for the River Hawks, throwing one inning and giving up one hit. Sophomore Olivia DeCitise (Troy, N.Y.) pitched the remaining five innings and struck out one Bulldog. Â
Game three between the River Hawks and Bulldogs was a battle. In the top of the first, freshman Thyanais Santiago (Methuen, Mass.) tallied a leadoff double to the right-center fence. She quickly advanced to third on a wild pitch before Wade followed her lead with a double to the same spot, giving the early, 1-0 lead to the River Hawks. Baumes then had a well-hit ball to third to put runners on the corners for Hardy, who drilled a single through the right side to increase UMass Lowell's margin to 2-0. In the bottom of the inning, the Bulldogs recorded one hit for one run to cut the difference in half, 2-1. Â
UMass Lowell began the second inning with another leadoff double, this time from freshman Callie Stubbs (Salem, Ore.). Santiago then made it to second on a throwing error by the third baseman, giving Stubbs plenty of time to score and putting the River Hawks up, 3-1. Baumes later singled up the middle, pushing Santiago home to grab the 4-1 lead for UMass Lowell. However, in the home half of the inning, Bryant took a 5-4 edge thanks to a grand slam to left. Â
It was a quiet third inning, as Fitzgerald was the lone River Hawk baserunner following a walk and the Bulldogs were limited to just one hit.Â
Spinello-Branch singled through the left side in the top of the fourth. In the home half of the inning, Bryant earned a hit and forced an error, putting two more runs on the board to now lead, 7-4. Â
In the fifth inning, Neeld doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch to get things restarted for the River Hawks. Fitzgerald then recorded an RBI, as she was able to get Neeld home, cutting Bryant's lead to 7-5.
The sixth inning consisted of just three batters for each team. The top of the seventh was the last chance for UMass Lowell, but Baumes was the lone baserunner, as she reached first on a walk before Bryant closed out the 7-5 decision.
The River Hawks will head home to face Merrimack on Wednesday, April 16 in a doubleheader with first pitch set for 2 p.m. at River View Field. Â
