The River Hawks Take on Round-Robin With Richmond and Lafayette

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team (3-6) heads to Virginia for a round-robin event this weekend with host Richmond (10-2) and Lafayette (1-9) from March 7-9.

LAST TIME OUT
The River Hawks squared off against USC Upstate in a three-game series last weekend, grabbing their third win of the 2025 season, 11-8, on Friday afternoon. Senior Alex Luccini (Hopedale, Mass.) headlined the game for UMass Lowell, as he added four RBI off two homers. Senior Andres Hulfachor (Nashua, N.H.) entered as the relief pitcher and grabbed his first win of the season in that contest. Redshirt-sophomore Nick Dirito (Plymouth, Mass.) closed the game for UMass Lowell on the mound, tossing four big strikeouts in 3.1 innings pitched to earn his second save of the season. Sophomore Sean O'Leary (Foxboro, Mass.) sparked the offense in the second match with the Spartans, recording four hits (4-5), seven RBI and three runs, but the River Hawks were unable to get the win. In game three, junior Zachary Scott (Lunenburg, Mass.) went 3-for-5 at bat with two RBI for the River Hawks, but USC Upstate would take the 12-4 decision. 

LEADING THE FLOCK
Following the opening weeks of the season, Fish leads the team in batting average (.469), OPS (1.303), hits (15) and doubles (6). After his big weekend, O'Leary's numbers have increased, ranking first on the team in runs (9) and home runs (3). Scott, a consistent standout, has added 12 hits, three doubles, six RBI, seven runs, a .343 batting average, and a .941 OPS, which has earned him top five marks, so far, on the team in those statistics. Junior Joseph DeLanzo (Nutley, N.J.) leads the team with 11 RBI, as well.

On the mound, Dirito has thrown in 7.1 innings, tying for a team-high 12 strikeouts, allowing six hits with a 1.23 ERA. Along with it, he's posted two saves, his most recent coming against USC Upstate, and collected a 1.36 WHIP on the season. Sophomore Alfred Mucciarone (Franklin, Mass.) has started in three games this season, obtaining 10 strikeouts, while posting an earned run average of 5.65. Redshirt junior Brendan Holland (North Andover, Mass.) has hurled eleven strikeouts in the three games that he has appeared in. Junior Brian Foley (Milton, Mass.) has notched five strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched.

AMERICA EAST HONORS
O'Leary was an anchor on the offensive side during the weekend slate at USC Upstate, helping earn his first ever America East Player of the Week. His honor came from a .636 batting average and a slugging percentage of 1.364, while adding two homers and seven RBI on the weekend.

HIT INTO PLAY
The River Hawks have been consistent to start the season, adding three more games with 10+ hits during the series against USC Upstate for a total of five this season. The most recent happened this past Saturday afternoon at USC Upstate, as the squad added its second 16-hit game, with the first occurring on the third matchup against Appalachian State. 

CRACKING THE LEADERBOARD
Fish, still making his name active on the leaderboard for batting average, ranks 35th in DI for the NCAA, hitting .469 on the season (15-32), so far. He's also tied in 10th in doubles per game with a .67 average. Fish has knocked six doubles over nine games played.

AE OVERALL PLAYER STATISTICAL RANKS
Fish ranks first in on-base percentage (.553), and second for batting average (.469), OPS (1.303) and doubles (6) in the America East. He sits fourth for slugging percentage (.750) and hits (15), while ranking ninth in runs scored (8). Sophomore Rowan Masse (Manchester, Conn.) has claimed seventh in on-base percentage (.478). Sophomore Scott Donahue (Medfield, Mass.) has grabbed eighth for overall batting average (.367). O' Leary ranks third for total home runs (3), as Luccini sits in ninth (2) out of the America East. O'Leary has loaded the stat sheet putting him in position to rank fifth in RBI (9), sixth in slugging percentage (.697), seventh in OPS (1.144) and eighth in hits (12). Scott claims fourth in stolen bases (3). DeLanzo fills the second spot for RBI (11), on the America East leaderboard.

For the pitchers, Mucciarone sits in seventh in earned run average (5.65) in the America East, while adding an opposing batting average of .333 for ninth in the conference. Dirito has earned 12 total strikeouts ranking fourth in the AE with graduate student Kevin Zarnoch Jr. (Boston, Mass.) behind in fifth with 12 as well. Holland grabs ninth in strikeouts with 11. Dirito also owns second in saves on the season (2).

SCOUTING RICHMOND
Richmond enters the weekend on a three-game win streak, with the most recent happening this past​​ Tuesday, March 4, in a 14-3 win over Towson in seven innings. The Spiders have a 10-2 record, going 8-2 at home, so far. Graduate student Brady O'Brien led the way for Richmond in Tuesday's game against Towson, totaling 2-for-3 at bat, with four RBI, two runs and one homer on the day. 

Offensively, junior Jordan Jaffe has been a top player for the Spiders recording 17 hits, 15 RBI, 13 runs, four doubles and three home runs on the season. Graduate student Phil Bernstein has been effective, adding a .475 batting average (19-40), with 10 RBI, 19 runs and five doubles. For the Richmond pitchers, junior Ryan Bilka has been exceptional in four appearances this season, tossing in 15.2 innings while striking out 15 batters. His overall earned run average sits at .57 while his WHIP is at .38.  

SCOUTING LAFAYETTE
Lafayette comes into the upcoming weekend following a defeat against Davidson, 9-1, on Sunday, March 2. Lafayette has had a hard beginning to its season, standing at an overall record of 1-9. Freshman Alex Barrist was the highlight player for Lafayette in its previous game against Davidson, tallying 2-for-4 at bat, with one run.

Lafayette's offensive pieces consist of senior Easton Brenner, and freshman Jack Mislan. Brenner has posted a .345 batting average (10-29) and an OPS of 1.043, with seven RBI, three runs and four doubles for the Leopards. Mislan has helped add 10 hits with six RBI and four runs. The top pitcher for the Leopards has been senior Joe Skapinetz, who threw in 14.1 innings, hurling 18 strikeouts. His earned run average sits at 4.40 on the season with a WHIP of 1.33. 

MATCHUP HISTORY
This weekend marks the first time UMass Lowell will be meeting with both Richmond and Lafayette in the Division I era.
