River Hawks Drop Heartbreaker to Quinnipiac, 12-11

Story Links

LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) scored a team-high four goals, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (5-2) fell in a heartbreaker to the Quinnipiac Bobcats (5-1), 12-11, on Wednesday night.

"I thought we started slowly, we were a little bit timid," said Head Coach Lisa Miller. "We turned the ball over a little in the clearing game. We knew the goalkeeper was having a good year, she's good and was going to make us work. I think sometimes our Achilles heel is we shoot, and we shoot blind. There are just some things we need to get better at."

Bowers, who added two ground balls to her stat line, was one of five River Hawks to find the back of the net. Sophomore Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) was tied for the team lead with four points, coming off two goals and two assists. Junior Audra Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) and senior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) each chipped in two goals, while junior Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.) added one of her own. Sophomore Ellie Chung (Villanova, Pa.) added the first assist of her career, while in net sophomore Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) made six saves.

Quinnipiac started the game strong, scoring a pair of goals in the opening five minutes. Although they added two more with just under six minutes on the clock, the River Hawks stepped up to the challenge, starting with a free-position goal by Hansen with 5:20 on the clock to make it a 4-1 game. Looking to keep the opposition from re-extending their lead, the hosts locked down on defense, not allowing a goal for the remainder of the period to keep it a three-score deficit.

Despite the Bobcats adding their fifth goal of the afternoon just under two minutes into the second, the River Hawks countered immediately, using a goal off the stick of Lydon to get back on the board. They didn't stop there, though, as moments later Catlin found the back of the net for the first time, pulling her squad within two, 5-3, with 8:58 on the clock. Quinnipiac responded with two of its own, but excellent defense in the final five minutes by UMass Lowell, alongside goals from Bowers and Lydon, kept it a two-score game, 7-5, heading into the break.

Following a goal by the Bobcats to open the second, the River Hawks capitalized on a woman-up situation, scoring a goal off the stick of Shultz. Although the visitors fired right back to retake a three-goal lead, the River Hawks took control on both sides of the ball, not allowing a goal for the final 11 minutes of the quarter while going on a 4-0 run, featuring two goals from Bowers and one each from Catlin and Hansen, to take a 10-9 lead into the final quarter.

Picking up where they left off, Bowers struck for the fourth time with 11:07 on the clock to give her squad a two-goal buffer. Quinnipiac answered though using a 3-0 scoring burst to hop back in front, 12-11, with 4:34 remaining. Looking to find an equalizer, Hansen took one last shot attempt with eight seconds to play, but the Bobcats' keeper got in front of it, sealing the 12-11 final score.

Next up, the River Hawks welcome the Le Moyne Dolphins to town on Saturday, March 8. Opening draw is scheduled for noon at Cushing Field.
