Story Links

LOWELL, Mass. – Senior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) and sophomore Jillian Goldie (Owen Sound, Ontario) each scored five goals, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (9-2, 3-0 AE) took down the UAlbany Great Danes (3-8, 1-1 AE), 13-9, on Saturday night.

With the win, the River Hawks are off to their best start in program history and their best start in conference play.

"I feel like in the conference, everyone has to bring their best game," said Head Coach Lisa Miller. "We started, I don't want to use the word slowly, they were a little more physical, they've played a really tough schedule, so I thought we started a little tentative but corrected out of it. Got to love the conference right now, every game is going to be a nail-biter, so it's fun."

Catlin, who added an assist for a six-point day, added two ground balls and ten draw controls to her stat line. Goldie also added an assist to help lead the offense, as well as two ground balls. Behind them, junior Audra Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) chipped in with two goals and an assist, while junior Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.) tallied a goal of her own. Rounding out the scoring, sophomore Bronwyn Hilbert (Lancaster, Pa.) finished with an assist. In net, sophomore Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) made ten saves while allowing only nine goals, good for a .526 save percentage.

Although both sides focused on the defensive end to open the game, it took less than four minutes to strike, as Hansen connected on a free position shot, giving her squad the early 1-0 edge. Over the next three minutes, the Great Danes hit their stride on offense, adding two goals to take their first lead of the night, 2-1. The score remained the same for nearly five minutes, but with 3:12 on the clock, Goldie snuck a shot past the keeper to knot up the score at 2-2. In the final moments, the visitors added one more, taking a 3-2 lead into the second quarter.

Looking to build on their lead, the Great Danes added their fourth tally of the night three minutes into the second to make it a two-goal difference. The River Hawks responded with a vengeance, as the defense locked down to hold the opposition scoreless for the remainder of the half. Meanwhile, the offense caught fire, with Catlin and Goldie each finding the back of the net to even the score at 4:45. They didn't stop there, though, as Catlin added two more, including one with under a second remaining, to take a 6-4 lead into halftime.

Set on starting the second half strong, the River Hawks came out firing, with Catlin tallying a goal on a free position less than three minutes in, extending the lead to 7-4.  Both sides followed with excellent defensive efforts, as the score stayed the same for over half the period before a UAlbany goal cut the lead to two. UMass Lowell refused to back down, scoring two of the period's final three goals, one each from Goldie and Hansen, to take a 9-6 lead into the fourth.

In the final period, Goldie opened the scoring for the hosts, scoring on a woman-up situation less than 30 seconds in. With momentum on their side, the River Hawks began to pull away, using an unbelievable no-look goal from Goldie at 11:44, immediately followed by a strike from Shultz to make it a six-goal difference, 12-6. The Great Danes tried to make a comeback, scoring three goals in the final 11 minutes, but the River Hawks fought off any further attempts while adding another goal from Catlin, sealing the 13-9 decision.

Next up, the River Hawks hit the road to take on the UMBC Retrievers on Saturday, April 5. The opening draw is set for noon at UMBC Stadium in Baltimore, Md.
