River Hawks Fall, 4-2, in Final Game of the Series at UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. – Freshman Emily Baumes (Rexford, N.Y.) recorded a two-RBI triple, as UMass Lowell (5-16) fell, 4-2, to UMBC (8-20) in the final game of the series at The Diamond at UMBC in America East play on Sunday afternoon.

Baumes registered the lone River Hawk hit in the contest, going 1-for-3 at the plate. Freshman Taylor Dolan (Holbrook, Mass.) and sophomore Alaina Santoli (Lovettsville, Va.) each notched a stolen base. Sophomore Olivia DeCitise (Troy, N.Y.) pitched 5.2 innings and struck out three.

UMBC jumped out to an early, 3-0 lead with four hits in the bottom of the first. A quiet second inning for both teams followed, as no runs were scored and DeCitise picked up two strikeouts.

Freshman Thyanais Santiago (Methuen, Mass.) started the third inning with a four-pitch walk, followed by freshman Grace Stepp (Richboro, Pa.) moving her to second on a sac bunt. Santiago quickly reached third on a passed ball before Santoli walked and stole second to put two in scoring position for Baumes, who launched a two-run triple to right to cut the difference to just one However, the Retrievers were able to get one run back in the home half of the inning to stretch the difference to 4-2.

In the top of the fourth, freshman Madi Wade (Hagerstown, Md.) and Santiago got on base due to back-to-back walks. Dolan pinch-ran for Wade and was able to use her speed to steal second, but no runs were registered. The River Hawks held the Retrievers in the home half of the inning, keeping the score within two.

The fifth was a one, two, three inning for both teams. In the sixth, the Retrievers tagged a single to left, but did not add any more runs to the board.

UMass Lowell had its final chance in the seventh, but was not able to generate baserunners, ending the contest in favor of the home team, 4-2.

The River Hawks will return home to face Merrimack in non-conference play on Thursday, March 27 in a doubleheader starting a 2 p.m. at River View Field.
