River Hawks Fall, 12-6, in Final Matchup Versus Le Moyne

LOWELL, Mass. – Senior Brandon Fish (Londonderry, N.H.) went 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and one run, as the UMass Lowell baseball team (8-13) fell to Le Moyne (5-14) in a 12-6 ball game on Sunday afternoon.

"Disappointing day today, but still happy to win the series," stated Head Coach Nick Barese. "We have to improve our play defensively if we want to have success in conference. We gave Le Moyne too many extra chances today and they took advantage."

Senior Conor Kelly (Hopkinton, Mass.) tallied two knocks with one double and one run, while sophomore Scott Donahue (Medfield, Mass.) recorded one home run and two RBI.

Sophomore Alfred Mucciarone (Franklin, Mass.) was the starter on the bump today, throwing in 3.1 innings with five strikeouts. Junior Brian Foley (Milton, Mass.) fanned four batters through 2.0 innings pitched. Graduate student Kevin Zarnoch Jr. (Boston, Mass.) struck out three batters, while throwing 2.0 complete innings and graduate student Dylan Bedder (New Providence, N.J.) closed the game for the River Hawks, earning two strikeouts in 1.0 inning pitched.

Senior Alex Luccini (Hopedale, Mass.) put the River Hawks on top in the first inning, driving his third consecutive home run, to right field. Through the second and third, Mucciarone helped pioneer two clean innings to keep his side on top, 1-0.

However, the Dolphins retaliated in the fourth, plating five runs on four hits to take the upper hand. Foley then locked in to fan two batters, giving the River Hawks the momentum to respond in the bottom of the inning when junior Joseph DeLanzo (Nutley, N.J.) cracked a two-out, two-RBI single through the right side to cut the difference to 5-3. driving in the runners, 5-3.

The teams combined for three runs in the fifth, as the visitors first brought home two more on consecutive singles. The River Hawks would follow with a walk from sophomore Rowan Masse (Manchester, Conn.) before Fish drove the infielder home to make it 7-4.

To start the sixth, the visitors stretched the lead to 10-4, but Zarnoch entered in the seventh, setting the defense up for a 1-2-3 inning. In the home half, with one River Hawk on-base, Donahue took advantage of the opportunity, soaring a dinger to right field, cutting the lead to 10-6. The Dolphins sealed the game for good in the ninth, though, after running in two late scores for the 12-6 outcome.

The River Hawks make a quick trip on Tuesday, March 23, for a midweek contest against Merrimack starting at 6 p.m.
