River Hawks Fall, 72-42, in Season Finale at Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. – Sophomore Maddie Rice (Charlottesville, Va.) posted a team high of 13 points, as UMass Lowell (3-25, 1-15 AE) fell, 72-42, to Binghamton (15-14, 7-9 AE) in its final game of the season on Saturday afternoon at the Event Center.
"We had an opportunity to see what some of our younger talent could do on the offensive end today," said Head Coach Denise King. "Thank you to our seniors and supportive fans who came to see our young ladies battle all season at home and on the road.
Rice went 6-for-10 from the field while also registering six boards, one assist and one block. Freshman Nia Chima (Toronto, Ontario) was perfect from the field to earn 11 points, as well as four rebounds and two assists.
UMass Lowell totaled the first basket of the game, with sophomore Rayne Durant (New Haven, Conn.) slipping into the paint for a layup at 7:15. A couple four-point runs from the Bearcats would help them pull ahead of the River Hawks, leading 10-6 at 1:46. Freshman Sille-Liis Mölder (Tallinn, Estonia) concluded the first ten minutes for the River Hawks, hitting a graceful baseline jumper with 1:04 to play. Binghamton led 15-9 going into quarter two.
Junior Sophie Baydanov (Vienna, Austria) notched an early three in the second quarter for UMass Lowell at 8:47 to cut the Bearcats' margin to 17-12. Binghamton was able to record a 12-point stretch near the end of the quarter with 53 seconds to go, increasing its advantage to 15 points, 33-18. The River Hawks claimed the final points of the half, as Chima hit a pair of free throws. Going into the break, Binghamton led UMass Lowell 33-20.
To start the third quarter, at 9:42 Chima confidently sunk a jumper from the top of the key with the Bearcats up, 33-22. Binghamton continued being an offensive threat, putting together seven points in a row at 4:47, pushing its lead to 46-28. UMass Lowell battled with Rice hitting a long jumper at 2:47, followed by a Durant layup at 1:55 to make it 48-33. The Bearcats grabbed the momentum heading into the final quarter, as the home team was able to secure a three-pointer with eight seconds left, increasing the lead to 54-35.
It was a quiet fourth quarter for UMass Lowell with Binghamton's defense picking up. On the offensive end, the Bearcats recorded a 16-point run, pushing the buffer to 72-38 with 1:33 to go. With the help of Rice and Chima, UMass Lowell concluded the contest positively, as each grabbed a pair of points. The River Hawks fought throughout the game, but they could not surpass the Bearcats.
The River Hawks will return in the 2025-26 season.
