LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell softball team (0-7) will travel to Norfolk, Va. for the Spartan/Pirate Challenge at NSU Softball Field on February 28-March 2. The River Hawks will first face Norfolk State (4-4) on Friday, February 28 for a doubleheader at 3 p.m. The following day on Saturday, March 1, UMass Lowell will face Hampton (6-6) in a doubleheader at 12 p.m. To wrap up the weekend, the River Hawks will have a rematch with Norfolk State on Sunday, March 2 with first pitch set for 11 a.m.

The River Hawks hold a 2-0 all-time record versus Norfolk State and a 2-1 all-time record against Hampton.
Last Time Out for the River Hawks
The River Hawks recently took part in the Camel Invitational, falling 4-3 to Campbell and then dropping a 9-5 decision to Eastern Kentucky. Baumes led the River Hawks throughout the weekend combining for five hits, two of them resulting in extra bases. Baumes also picked up three RBI, one run and one stolen base.
Leading UMass Lowell
Freshman Emily Baumes (Rexford, N.Y.) leads the River Hawks with a .500 batting average, a .625 slugging percentage and a .571 on-base percentage. The freshman has started in all seven games to post 12 hits, three of them being for extra bases. Baumes has also notched five RBI, three runs and two stolen bases with a perfect fielding percentage.
Sophomore Olivia DeCitise (Troy, N.Y.) has earned the lowest ERA so far in the circle with a 4.57 average and has struck out 12 throughout 15.1 innings. Junior Giana LaCedra (Tyngsboro, Mass.) holds a 6.14 ERA, throwing 21.2 innings and striking out 15.
Scouting the Spartans
Norfolk State most recently played in the Spartan/Pirate Invite at home, grabbing a 5-1 win against Mount St. Mary's (Md.) to then fall in game two to the Mount Maniacs, 5-2. Norfolk State would then fall to St. Bonaventure twice the following day, 3-2 and 4-0.
Kailey Bryant and Qween Edmonds both have seen 22 at-bats with eight starts to post .455 batting averages, including 10 extra-base hits each. Bryant has also stolen six bases so far this season.
Amaya McPherson has pitched 14.2 innings to hold the lowest ERA on the team with a 1.23 average, grabbing one win and striking out eight. Brierra Tyler has tossed 20 innings in the circle to average a 2.70 ERA with two wins and 12 strikeouts.
Scouting the Pirates
Hampton competed in the Spartan/Pirate Invite, as well, grabbing two wins. On day one, the Pirates earned an 8-7 victory in extra innings versus St. Bonaventure, then falling in game two to the Bonnies, 4-1. The following day of the tournament, Hampton first fell to Mount St. Mary's (Md.), 7-1, before grabbing an 11-7 win in game two against the Mount Maniacs.
Carmynn Bonner leads the Pirates with a .561 batting average throughout 41 at-bats. She has started in 11 games to total 23 hits, including seven extra-base hits, 12 runs and 11 RBI.
Jada Evans holds the lowest ERA at 1.40, pitching 30.0 innings and striking out 20 to grab two wins. Angelina Branch follows with a 2.31 ERA, 33.1 innings pitched, three wins and 23 strikeouts.
