River Hawks Fall, 57-35, to Vermont on Senior Day

LOWELL, Mass. Sophomore Abbey Lindsey (Staten Island, N.Y.) registered 18 points, as UMass Lowell (3-23, 1-13 AE) fell, 57-35, to Vermont (16-12, 11-3 AE) in America East action on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.

"We had a great atmosphere today," said Head Coach Denise King. "A little disappointed in our efforts after Thursday's contest. You're not going to win a lot of basketball games with 26 turnovers. We had some pretty good shots, we just couldn't knock them down."

Lindsey was 7-for-11 from the field, while also grabbing four rebounds, one assist and one steal.

The River Hawks won the first quarter, 5-3, as sophomore Rayne Durant (New Haven, Conn.) drove into the paint to earn back-to-back layups with 2:18 left on the clock.

Redshirt-senior Sydney Watkins (Indianapolis, Ind.) would get UMass Lowell started in the second quarter, hitting a turnaround jumper at 9:39, increasing the River Hawks' lead to 7-3. Freshman Sille-Liis Mölder (Tallinn, Estonia) followed this with a swift layup, dodging the Catamounts through the paint at 8:45 to put UMass Lowell up by six, 9-3. Vermont answered back with a 20-2 run to take the lead, 23-11, at 1:34. Lindsey took charge with about a minute left, sinking a baseline jumper and then blowing by all of the Catamounts to hit a wide-open layup with 31 seconds left in the half. The teams would head into the break with Vermont in front, 25-15.

Lindsey opened the second half with a three-point play, hitting a fast-break layup and getting fouled on the play, producing a successful shot at the line at 8:46. Vermont then totaled a 17-1 run before sophomore Maddie Rice (Charlottesville, Va.) ended the quarter on a high note for the River Hawks notching a midrange shot with 15 seconds to go. The Catamounts led 42-21 at the end of the third quarter.

The River Hawks would score first again in the fourth quarter, as Lindsey rushed through the paint to record a layup with freshman Nia Chima (Toronto, Ontario) following, as she swished a jumper at 7:57 with Vermont leading 42-26. The River Hawks and the Catamounts would trade baskets for the remainder of the quarter, with Vermont coming out on top 57-35.

Up next, the River Hawks will travel to Smithfield, R.I. to face America East foe Bryant on Thursday, February 27 with tipoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
