River Hawks' Offense Explodes for 20-15 Win Over Stonehill

WEYMOUTH, Mass. – Sophomore Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) scored a season-high five goals, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (4-0) exploded on offense for a 20-14 victory over the Stonehill Skyhawks (0-2) on Wednesday afternoon.

"Stonehill came ready to play, at one point they were up four," said head coach Lisa Miller. "Happy we were able to respond positively to being down. A lot of work to be done to get ready for top five opponent. I think we are excited by the challenge."

Bowers was one of nine River Hawks to tally a point in the midweek clash. Senior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) and junior Audra Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) each scored four goals and added an assist, while junior Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) finished with four goals. Freshman Georgia Ruscitti (Toronto, Ontario) led the team with three assists, while senior Megan Milkowich (Watertown, N.Y.), junior Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.), and freshman Sydney Correll (West Grove, Pa.) all contributed with a goal.

The River Hawks got to work early, scoring the first two goals of the match in under three minutes, as Hansen ripped a shot past the keeper
quickly followed by Lydon's first tally of the day. The Skyhawks responded with a vengeance, though, tallying five straight to take the lead, 5-2, with just over four minutes remaining in the first. After Bowers tallied a free-position goal to cut the lead to two, Stonehill countered with one more, but a goal by Catlin with three seconds remaining cut the deficit to 6-4 after one.

UMass Lowell erupted on offense in the second quarter, scoring three goals before the ten-minute mark, one each from Hansen, Catlin, and Lydon. They didn't stop there
though, as the visitors continued to roll with six more unanswered, highlighted by three from Bowers, to take a commanding seven-goal advantage, 13-6, with 3:46 on the clock. Stonehill however, finally got back on the board, striking twice in the final minutes to make it 13-8 heading into the break.

Both sides had a strong defensive presence to open the second half, as neither team could capitalize on a scoring opportunity for nearly five minutes. Although the hosts cut the difference to four at 10:21, the River Hawks responded instantly, using two goals in under a minute from Hansen and Bowers to make it 15-9. Moments later, Catlin added her third of the match, and despite a lone goal from the Skyhawks, UMass Lowell added two more to make it 18-10 heading into the final period.

Attempting to make a comeback, Stonehill scored twice to open the fourth, cutting the deficit to six with nine minutes to play. The River Hawks, however, scored two of the
next three, including Correll's first career goal, before the Skyhawks scored two goals in the final minutes, sealing the 20-15 decision.

Next
up, the River Hawks take on the #5/#6 Bulldogs on Saturday, February 22. Originally scheduled as a home game, Saturday's match will now be hosted by the Bulldogs at Reese Stadium with the opening draw scheduled for noon.
