River Hawks Fall In Hard-Fought Battle to No. 5/6 Yale, 16-6

NEW HAVEN, CT. – Junior Audra Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) recorded a team-high four points, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (4-1) fell in a hard-fought battle to the
No. 5/6  Yale Bulldogs (3-0), 16-6, on Saturday afternoon.

Hansen, who finished the day with a goal and three assists, was one of five River Hawks to record a point. Sophomore Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) finished with a team-best three goals, and junior Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.) added two assists. Rounding things out, junior Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.) and senior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) each chipped in a goal. In net, sophomore Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) made 10 saves in 55 minutes, while freshman Erin-Kate Roeder (Fallston, Md.) had two saves in five minutes of action.

The River Hawks started the game with an impressive defensive showing, allowing only two goals in the first ten minutes of the match, thanks to a caused turnover by Lydon and five saves from Kuhn. Despite trailing 2-0, UMass Lowell went to work on the offensive end. With 4:43 on the clock, Hansen found Bowers open to the left of the net, setting up the sophomore for a quick catch-and-shoot opportunity, which she capitalized on to pull her team within one. The Bulldogs however added two more in the final minute to own a 4-1 advantage through one quarter.

Picking up where they left off, Yale added four goals in the first five minutes of the second to take a seven-goal lead. The River Hawks refused to back down, and despite being in a woman-down situation, the visitors converted on a scoring opportunity, as Shultz ripped a shot past the opposing keeper, cutting the deficit to 8-2. The Bulldogs responded with three more goals, but in the final minutes of the half, Hansen found an opening on the offensive end, dashing between two defenders before firing a shot into the back of the net, making it an 11-3 game heading into the break.

Coming out of halftime, Yale took advantage of a free-position shot to extend their lead to nine. UMass Lowell quickly locked down on defense, holding the hosts to only two shots for nearly ten minutes to keep them from extending their lead. Meanwhile, with 5:14 on the clock, Bowers struck again, this time with an assist from Lydon, to make it a 12-4 game. Although the Bulldogs added two, the River Hawks struck again thanks to a goal from Catlin at 1:04, making it a seven-goal difference with a quarter to play.

Looking to pull off a fourth-quarter comeback, UMass Lowell started the period strong with a save from Kuhn less than a minute in. Yale, however, refused to let the visitors pull closer, scoring two goals to take a double-digit lead before a goal in the final seconds by Bower sealed the 16-6 decision.

Next up, the River Hawks continue the three-game road trip, traveling to Loudonville, N.Y. to battle the Siena Saints on Saturday, March 1. Opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Hickey Field.
