WEST HAVEN, Conn. — Behind a career performance from senior guard Sabrina Larsson (Uppsala, Sweden) and a second-half surge, the UMass Lowell women's basketball team (4-5) pulled away for a 60–43 road win at New Haven (2-6) on Saturday afternoon.
"Extremely proud of our effort today to get back in the win column," stated head coach Jon Plefka. "Tons of bright spots, including Sabrina shooting tremendously and Amina and Nia making a huge impact both offensively and defensively, just to name a few. A true team win for us."
Larsson led all scorers with a career-high 22 points, connecting on six three-pointers to anchor an offense that shot 50 percent from beyond the arc. Her shooting repeatedly swung momentum for the River Hawks, including a trio of threes that helped push separation on either side of halftime.
The opening half featured back-and-forth action, with both teams trading baskets through the first quarter and early parts of the second. New Haven briefly grabbed the lead midway through the second, but UMass Lowell responded with a run fueled by perimeter shooting. Threes from Amina Kameric (Seattle, Wash.) and Paris Gilmore (Youngstown, Ohio), followed by back-to-back makes from Larsson in the final two minutes, helped the River Hawks close the half on a surge and take a 27–20 lead into the locker room.
UMass Lowell wasted little time extending the margin after halftime. The River Hawks opened the third quarter with a 12–3 run, highlighted by a Larsson triple off an offensive rebound and a second-chance three from Gilmore, pushing the lead into double figures for the first time. Defensive pressure forced empty possessions on the other end, allowing UMass Lowell to maintain control throughout the period.
New Haven attempted to cut into the deficit late in the third, but the River Hawks answered each push. Larsson knocked down another three at the 6:11 mark, and a closing stretch of baskets and defensive stops sent UMass Lowell into the fourth with control of the game. The margin continued to grow in the final period, reaching as many as 18 as UMass Lowell set the pace and kept New Haven off the scoreboard down the final stretch.
Up next, the River Hawks wrap up their three-game road swing on Thursday with a matchup at DePaul. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. CT.
