HANOVER, N.H. – Both junior
Brandon Riley (Weymouth, Mass.) and senior
Derek Munroe (Tewksbury, Mass.) broke the school heptathlon record at the Dartmouth December Invitational on Saturday morning.
The multi-event athletes shined throughout the two-day event, kicking it off strong in the first four events on Friday afternoon, and securing the double school record on Saturday's day two. Riley concluded the weekend with the top spot, collecting 5,241 points in the heptathlon, while Munroe tallied 5,129 points.
"It's always fun knowing someone will walk away with a school record if they go out and do what they are capable of," said Associate Head Coach Ally Waruch. "Both of them performed the way they needed to, but they also know they left points out there and can do more. They are constant competition for each other and it's always fun watching them push and support one another.
As the only two competitors in the heptathlon, Riley and Munroe kept the momentum going from day one and began the day strong in the 60m hurdles. Riley finished with a personal-best time of 8.36, before Munroe crossed the finish line with an 8.86 mark. Next was the pole vault, where Munroe finished first, clearing 4.60m and Riley tied his personal record with a vault of 4.10m. They closed out the heptathlon with the 1,000m run, where Munroe crossed the finish line first with a time of 2:51.63 and Riley finished just behind him with a personal-best 2:54.86 mark.
The River Hawks will now take a break from competition and will return on Saturday, January 10 for the Ivy League/America East Challenge back at Dartmouth.
