HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior
Jared Frey (Columbus, Ohio) totaled 12 points, as the UMass Lowell men's basketball team (1-1) faced a 110-47 setback against No. 4 Connecticut (2-0) on Friday evening at the PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford.
Frey went a perfect, 6-for-6 from the foul line. Junior
Xavier Spencer (Calgary, Alberta), who also went 6-for-6 on free throws, chipped in with 11 points, while adding four rebounds.
The Huskies settled in quickly, jumping out in front in the early minutes. Senior
Austin Green (Sicklerville, N.J.) sunk three free throws to get the River Hawks on the board before Frey added a pair from the line later in the half. UMass Lowell continued to battle, as Green floated in a second-chance hook shot with just over six minutes remaining in the first half.
Less than two minutes later, Spencer hit a pull-up three ahead of the under-four media timeout. Spencer and freshman
JJ Massaquoi (Prince George's County, Md.) each went 2-for-2 at the foul line down the stretch before Frey knocked down a quick trey from the corner just before the buzzer, but the Huskies took a 64-17 lead into the break.
Coming out of halftime, the River Hawks went to work, scoring nine of the first 13 points, including back-to-back treys from Frey and junior
Darrel Yepdo (Dracut, Mass.). Frey and Spencer then both made good on opportunities at the line and Massaquoi drained consecutive buckets, including a fast-break layup off a turnover to make it 84-33 with 11 minutes left to play.
Junior
Khalil Farmer (Philadelphia, Pa.), Green, Frey, Simmons II and Spencer all made free throws in the waning minutes. With just over three minutes left to play, Spencer fought through traffic for a contested two and Massaquoi followed with an and-1. However, the home team sealed the 110-47 decision.
The River Hawks are back in action on Monday, November 10 when they host New Haven at the Kennedy Family Athletic Complex at 6 p.m.
